About this Event

Yuko says “Hello good people. Apparently it is nearly the end of the year. I am not sure how this happened, but there you go. This week we will have a bit of an early celebration of El Nacional Día del Tango. The official day is on 11 December, but we can celebrate it early at El Boliche! It became the national day of tango because two tango giants were born on this day: Carlos Gardel and Julio de Caro. You don't hear their recordings at milongas much, if at all, and I will feature them mostly by playing their compositions. Carlos Gardel is the most revered singer of tango, and many consider it to be disrespectful to dance to his singing. Julio de Caro is one of the giants, who laid the foundation of tango arrangements as we know and love them. I personally love his recordings, especially from the 1920s. I don't play them often though, as they are less popular among dancers, partly because they are perhaps harder to dance to. They have a freer relationship to the background pulse, so some people seem to struggle to find the beat in them. But! It's a special day. I will kick off the night with De Caro recordings from the 1920s, so come early and have a go, if my description piques your interest. And then there will be some Gardel and De Caro compositions through the night, perhaps featured in a slightly unusual way.” This is the second-last El Boliche of the year!
