El Dorado is a new World Music experience with a Latin flavour from Blueprint Sounds, the team behind Stars & Bars Festival, the crew from Vibrating Planet and Geelong’s destination laneway bar Medusa. El Dorado featuring Kaiman Jimenez brings Vibrating Planet’s Latin American Party Vibe to Geelong’s Rock O’cashel lane at Medusa on Friday 8th December, 2023 from 7pm – Midnight MC Kaimán Jimenez is a musical force, borne Barranquillero, and the embodiment of Picó culture here in Australia. The inimitable MC Kaiman, Colombian born singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, Oscar Jimenez now based in Melbourne said “I’m excited to share a little bit of Pico culture and introduce the sounds of Oceanic Cumbia to Geelong’s nightlife as well as connecting with the local Latin music & dance communities.” Jimenez also known as an award-winning producer and leader of popular Latin alternative bands such as Watussi and AMARU TRIBE, has opened for a diverse range of artists such as Seun Kuti, Manu Chao, Earth Wind and Fire and more. Recently performing as part of El Gran Mono familia at WOMADelaide, Rising (Heavy Congress) and Vivid Sydney as well as Colombia Y Brasil & Counterculture events in Melbourne, Those who know, know. And you need a dedicated crew given the size of some of these party machines. Each picotero incorporate their own perceptions and understandings of these rhythms, as well as their own sonic traditions. In Barranquilla, Cartagena and other cities and towns on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, huge outdoor sound systems pump lively champeta, salsa, calypso, cumbia, zouk and soukous tracks to throngs of amped-up dancers. Each set has its own distinctive brand represented by these kaleidoscopic drawings. Colorful lasers and pulsing lights zip over the crowds and illuminate psychedelic hand-drawn paintings of dragons, musicians, soldiers and otherworldly figures that adorn the speakers and stage. The picós, as they are called in Colombia, can be found in every working class neighbourhood and have a social and communal function like the sonideros in Mexico or Jamaica’s sound systems.
