El Swing – the best in live and recorded Salsa Sarabanda live + El Swing DJs + Yamile’s Salsa Dance Class Saturday October 11th The Portico 23a, Knights Hill SE27 0HS 7.30-12 £12 OTD Ahi Na Ma It’s always a pleasure to welcome Sarabanda back to El Swing at The Portico, and in October we will be celebrating both the 100th birthday of Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso (21 October 1925 – 16 July 2003) aka Celia Cruz aka “La Reina”, and paying tribute to Eddie (Eduardo) Palmieri (December 15, 1936 – August 6, 2025) the great and innovative Salsa and Latin Jazz pianist, bandleader and composer, with a special set from Sarabanda. Led by pianist Sara McGuinness Sarabanda is a musical collective featuring Cuban bassist Jimmy Martinez, his countrywoman Yuri Moreno on vocals and party-starting, another Cuban compay, Landy Diaz, on trombone, Bill Bland on percussion all led by Sara who has rightly earned a mighty reputation in both the salsa and African music scenes. Our Colombian Salsa teacher, Yamile, gets the hips moving with her all-comers Salsa Dance Class from 7.30, followed by the club night. The DJs (on rotation) are Johnny G, Carey Lyseight and Gerry Lyseight 7.30 – 8.30: Yamile leads her swinging all-comers Salsa Dance Class 8.30-12.00: Salsa Party: 8.30-10: El Swing DJs 10-11: Sarabanda 11-12: El Swing DJs Come and support live music at a great venue with lovely people as far as the eye can see and, of course, the very best in salsa!
