Evoke Dance Socials are for dancers of ALL backgrounds and levels. Fusion partner dancing was born from dancers of all backgrounds getting together and mixing it up. Dancers from WCS, Blues, Fusion, Tango, Zouk, Kizomba, Bachata, Swing & Lindy, Ballroom, and more will find a wide range of music that evokes reaching for different rhythms and figures. There is nothing quite like the inspiration and resonance that occurs when mixing it up with dancers from different backgrounds. Fusion dance has been referred to as the mixed martial arts of social dance. Who you are is in your dance. We come together as dancers to belong, to play, to be fierce, to be free, to be our authentic selves. We share our stories through our movement and co-create new ones in dance partnership. Evoke Dance is an inclusive space where dancers respect one another, and by virtue of this attain the level of freedom of expression, spontaneity, connection and creativity in a warm and welcoming community. Class and Instructor: Class focus: This intro class has something for dancers of every level and will focus on Latin Ballroom and West Coast Swing elements as basic patterns to enjoy fusion dance through. Instructor: Henry Lankin originally trained in Latin Ballroom and brings this dance base to various styles including Blues, Fusion, Salsa, and West Coast Swing. He previously taught Latin Ballroom and Fusion in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara with a focus on connection, musicality, and hip action. He continues to explore connection and cross-dance style communication primarily through Fusion and West Coast Swing. There is a tap for water in the studio, bring your water bottles, or come with water. There will not be any cups or jugs, but plenty of water. You can purchase water from the studio for $1 a bottle, please give the person at the door the money for this so we can pay the studio if you choose to but water. About the organizer: Andrea Giammattei is an organizer, teacher, and multi-genre DJ (DJ Gia Soul) on the NYC Fusion partner dance scene. Andrea’s background is a fusion of many disciplines which explain why fusion partner dance is her guilty pleasure. Andrea Giammattei has led groups in workshops in the US, Canada, and Europe for over 20 years, including dance and other live arts. Andrea combines the live artistic disciplines and somatics to create expansive opportunities for dancers to be empowered in their fullest expression. Andrea’s dance background spans a wide range of individual and partner dance styles across cultures and genres, culminating in her love affair with Fusion partner dancing for its irreverence, freedom to create, and unique partnering connection. Her work through Evoke Dance and Dancing For Life are about the intersection of how music and dance touch us, how we share our stories through dance, and how being present with another dancer evokes a mutual meditation, evoking moving mosaics of human expression and connection through dance. Her workshops and DJ’d sets present evocative themes with emotional depth, culturally diverse textures, sensuality and playfulness through a diverse music journey.
