About this Event

It's not only maple that's sweet! 🍁πŸ₯ž First Friday Fusion is BACK in the swing and tapping into that flowing saccharide feel along with your favorite flavors of social dance at Studione in the Old North End of Burlington! Bring yourself, bring friends, and bring all your mad March moves. We'll provide the heat with a cookin' DJ set to dance the night away. The event starts at 8:00PM with a 30-minute intro into a dance flavor-of-the-night with Sarah Snow teaching some smooth latin styles! After which we have 3+ hours of social dancing lined up with a wide range of crossover music to inspire the fusion of many different genres. ********************** If you're wondering "What is Fusion?" this bit's for you! Our event's interpretation of this exciting movement is as the blending of two (sometimes more) distinct social dance styles into something which incorporates the flavors of both. Examples of this could include starting with a smooth West-Coast Swing base and then incorporating some spicy styling out of Salsa, or perhaps a blending of earthy rooted Blues with the smoldering intensity of Argentine Tango (As demonstrated in this video youtube.com/watch?v=0cs4BFafRpc). In line with this idea, the music supplied by our DJs will also shift through different genres which reflects this diversity and offers many opportunities for different combinations. ********************** If anyone is interested in expanding their dance repertoire a bit, the quick 30-minute class near the beginning of the event is intended to provide an introduction to the fundamental flavor of a chosen style for this month. What makes that dance FEEL the way it does, and how can you incorporate that elsewhere. We are always interested in connecting with new dance communities and learning, so if you might be interested in teaching a class please reach out and we'd love to hear from you! Also, if you're interested in taking a hand at the DJ station for an hour or two of the evening and sharing your favorite beats, we'd love to have you! Please reach out and let me know so we can schedule you in. ---Payment--- To make these dances happen sustainably, we are asking that folks donate on a sliding scale between $10-$20 per person, (recommended $15), sent by Venmo to @Will-Jeffries-5 for the night. (Student level: $5) This allows us to cover the cost of renting studio space and other supplies that make these dances happen. If Venmo's not your thing, we'll have a donation jar at the door for cash or cheque as well. If $15 is a hardship, please reach out and perhaps see if there's some way to help out with the event (Such as teaching a lesson or DJing a set) since we really want you to be here and make this work for everybody :) ---Parking--- Easy parking right onsite. To enter the dance studio simply walk in through the doors that open onto the parking lot, and follow the signs. ---Covid et al--- Our COVID policy for this event is intended to help balance minimizing risks while maximizing enjoyability. Firstly: It should go without saying to please of course monitor your own conditions, and stay home if you are feeling unwell so that we can all gather and dance together another day. Next, we are requiring vaccines and testing prior to attendance. For testing we accept a PCR from within the previous two days, or a home LAMP, same-day antigen, or rapid test. ***Important Clarification!*** Several folks in our dance community have communicated their experiences that swabbing the nose AND THROAT when using at-home tests did in some cases show positive test-results earlier than just swabbing the nose. The test kit is the same, just a different procedure. This is not medical advise, simply sharing experience and a suggestions that can help keep the community safe. Please post your test results here or message them to me directly prior to attending. And of course, WASH THOSE HANDS! ---Safety--- And finally, these events are based on the principals of safer spaces and intentional consent. If there are any concerns please address them directly to the co-hosts Will Jeffries or Janine Thoma, at any time before, during, or after the event. We are also in the process of developing a comprehensive safer spaces policy and process as well, and if you are interested we'd love to hear your input! Stay well, bring respect, bring your passion, and have fun!
