WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Dance * Observe * Compose (repeat)
Working with Contact Improvisation as the foundational form, we will broaden our compositional skills to create more range and diverse choice-making in our dancing.
We will refine our Contact Improvisation skills by creating more clarity, efficiency and ease in how our bodies move together in three-dimensional space.
We will expand our abilities and awareness as Composers of our dances and the larger dance, through the use of compositional techniques including the Viewpoints, systems work influence from Body Mind Centering and other choreographic approaches.
Specifically we will:
*hone our CI skills including: listening through touch, organizing the body efficiently around the point of contact, modulating tone, giving and receiving weight with ease and using momentum
*work with the basic Viewpoints vocabulary
*receive clear scores to expand our compositional awareness while dancing in and out of contact
*use time and space as essential partners, deepening our ability to physically connect with our partner but also add more range to our expressive qualities
*acquire practical tools to expand our connection to feeling and passion as we co-create in the dance
*integrate the multidimensionality of the experience of improvisation [beyond physical contact] and open to new creative depths
Krista DeNio is a choreographer, director, performer, writer and educator, committed to developing new forms of performance work, and evolving interdisciplinary thinking and creation between the fields of dance and theater [in particular]. Krista has been a practitioner of Contact Improvisation since 1996, and approaches the form from a variety of perspectives, from it's technical foundation and support of partnering work in choreography and performance, to the radical political potentialities that exist within the practice and is thrilled to be a part of the community in dialogue surrounding the evolution of the practice. She studied Viewpoints with Wendell Beavers, and the SITI Company and learned a lot about composition from her earliest dance teachers, to her graduate school guru, Barbara Dilley, along with some amazing theater directors and makers, including Tectonic Theater Project. She loves dancing with Alicia, and is thrilled to deepen this research together and to learn more from this amazing woman and her incredibly skilled body [of knowledge]! www.kristadenio.com
Alicia Grayson has been passionately involved with dancing, teaching and performing CI for the past 25 years. She has taught contact improvisation as an adjunct faculty at George Washington University, University of Denver, Naropa University and Shenandoah University. She teaches CI, yoga and pilates classes in Boulder, CO and regularly travels both nationally and internationally to teach. She has been dancing and performing with Tumblebones Contact Improvisation Collective for 8 years and is a core member of the Boulder Contact Lab. Her long time practices of authentic movement, yoga and meditation are important influences on her dancing and teaching. She is a certified Hakomi therapist and a graduate of Body Mind Somanautics, an advanced training in somatic attachment, group process and anatomy re-patterning. She delights in exploring and discovering new depths to contact improvisation and is particularly interested int he intersection of physics and expression and the mind/body relationship. She is delighted to be collaborating with Krista in this workshop! http://www.tumblebones.com
