About this Event

“Even though the Savoy advertised it as a contest, the big apple was closed to the public. only Whitey’s dancers did it, and Buchanan never bothered to declare a winner. the caller danced around in the middle of the circle, surrounded by about 10 couples, hollering out the upcoming steps just before the phrase in the music turned. He always started off with the basic steps, but he would usually break it up by bringing up a team (a couple) to do a lindy solo. The whole thing was very impromptu which meant nobody knew who their partner was going to be.” pg 151, Frankie Manning, Ambassador of Lindy Hop. This is a FUN competition open to all and any lindy hoppers! The idea is to have some fun and to test out the rules of a format that will be used at SEA Jam, so please do help out by joining in. Rules: 1. All competitors are given a number. Leads odd and follows even. 2. All stand in a circle and a Caller (from the organisers) will stand in the middle. 3. The Caller will call Big Apple jazz steps for one chorus (16 eights) On the16th eight, Caller will call 2 numbers, a lead and a follow (ie # 1 & # 6) and the two dancers will meet in the centre of the circle to dance. The process is repeated for 3 different songs and tempos. A winner Lead and a winner Follow will be chosen. Sign up here please!
