Gathering Pieces of Peace - Dance Workshop #3 with Melissa Lewis Wong and Megan Lowe Event Timing: Sunday, September 24th, 2023 | 10:30am-2:30pm (followed by an invitation to get a bite to eat together in Berkeley, after the workshop) Event Address: Bancroft Studio at UC Berkeley 2401 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA 94720 Registration: Free/by Donation https://forms.gle/aFaGzEy8dZLeWGPo8 Our Third Workshop is part of UC Berkeley's Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies' movement series, Exploration of Forms. -- Workshop Description: Gathering Pieces of Peace - Dance Workshop #2 with Melissa Lewis Wong Hatico-Byrne and Megan Lowe After our 2nd workshop with a group of 32 lovely dancers in July, and 4 powerful performances of "Gathering Pieces of Peace," Megan Lowe Dances is excited to continue sharing some of the creative process, dance movement, and community building practices we have developed during the creation of "Gathering Pieces of Peace!" You are invited to engage with generative writings, conversations, and movement that considers complex identities, and explore spoken text, dance (centered in contact improvisation/partnering and modern/contemporary dance, as well as each participant’s movement lineages), and maybe even song. We want to collaborate with you in generating a supportive environment for creation and connection! All dancers are welcome to join this workshop, and it is our mission to facilitate spaces with a BIPOC majority. A previous MLD workshop participant wrote: “It’s so rare for me to see my background reflected in movement instructors. The safe container cultivated through the gentle buildup of warm-up exercises and explicitly practicing verbal cues of boundary-setting empowered me to try new things and go beyond my usual notions of what I can and can't do. I also appreciated the presence of many POC helping me feel less like an outlier.” MLD creates spaces of dance study where BIPOC are not the minority, de-centering normative white/eurocentric experiences and cultivating diversity in Bay Area dance. In consideration of this mission, if you identify as white and would like to attend the workshop, we enthusiastically encourage you to reach out to your POC friends and have them join along! P.S. In true MLD fashion, there will be snacks provided! -- About the Project we are sharing Process from, for the Workshop: Megan Lowe Dances presents "Gathering Pieces of Peace," a dance theater work that explores mixed-race Asian American experiences, with an artistic team composed of folks who identify in this way. Through thoughtful text, soulful song, and dynamic dancing, MLD addresses the complexity of navigating our fractured selves in support of wholeness, and is co-creating a supportive environment for connection that radiates out into our communities.
