Series detail below. ________________________________________________________________ Learn Salsa, Bachata and Cha Cha Cha with ¡Pa'lante! Register at http://proyectopalante.org/ or in person at class | THURSDAYS 5:00-6:15pm: 2.22, 3.1, 3.8, 3.15, 3.22, 3.29. DESCRIPTION: This series teaches the fundamentals of Salsa technique and repertoire and introduces the basic steps of Bachata, Son and Cha Cha Cha. Salsa Cubana, also known as “Casino,” is danced individually, as a couple, or in a group. Rueda de Casino (“Salsa Wheel”) is danced among multiple couples via call and response. In this series, Rueda is used as a methodology to expedite Salsa and Latin Dance learning in any format. Focus is on the individual dancer in connection with a single partner. Participants acquire skills in timing, body movement, lead-follow technique, space use, footwork, turns and combinations. Music is provided, video recording allowed and dance performance opportunity available. FORMAT Class begins with a timing and movement warm-up. We teach step variations and patterns in rotating lines. In the second half of class we apply these step patterns and turns in partner format, where combinations are formed through lead-follow. After the first hour, we teach 15 minutes of basics in other Latin social dance: Bachata and Cha Cha Cha. Class ends with a 15 minute practice session, where repetition of moves and individual assistance from instructors helps students solidify skills. MUSICALITY In Salsa, timing, rhythm and dance flow is conveyed through layered music. Lead and follow between partners is created through the frame, points of connection and tension. The flavor of Salsa derives from a fusion of Afro-Latin and European music and dance forms, enhanced by cultural phenomena from around the world, including jazz, ballroom and various styles of pop music. Salsa is dynamic and accessible. Beginner Salsa will help you acquire the skills and sensibility necessary to survive on the dance floor, advance to higher levels and form a basis for your own style. VENUE The WSH Fifth Floor Lounge is a voluminous gothic style space with studio mirrors and over 2000 square feet of fine hardwood floor made for dance lovers. Parking is available behind WSH Cinema, across Campus Road behind Anabel Taylor Hall, and on West and Central Campus. ATTIRE Wear comfortable, fitted, non-baggy attire. We suggest dance shoes, flats, worn sneakers or other well-fitted footwear that is easy to move in. Loose shoes and high heels not recommended. DINNER and DANCE PARTY Every Wednesday Salsa and Latin social dance parties are held after class at Agava Restaurant. All students taking dance class with Palante receive a 10% dinner discount, good for the entire bill, on Wednesdays.
