This exploratory multi-day non-residential CI workshop tunes attention toward the invisible structures shaping our movement: lines of force, points of contact, shared centres of balance, and the living geometry that emerges between bodies in motion. We will explore perception; How bodies negotiate gravity, momentum, and risk. How sensing sharpens under pressure. How a third intelligence emerges when two bodies remain in touch, yet move independently. Through guided exploration, weight-sharing, and playful investigation, we enter the thresholds where fear and pleasure meet, where falling becomes information, and where the body learns faster than the mind. This is a space for curiosity, courage, and listening with the whole body. A practice of attention. A study of relation. A geometry of listening, breathing... sensing. From Valentyn on the Workshop Material -- If classical geometry maps ideal figures in abstract space, Contact Improvisation softens the ideal into proposition, response & meeting. Geometry drawn by sensing bodies in constant negotiation with physical laws, imagination that leans & falls into capacity of being tangible, where touch is not as an endpoint but an ongoing (extended) tool for inquiry. When two bodies meet & Gravity functions as a primary architect - they generate a shared point of reference—a moving axis around which balance, fall, suspension, and recovery are organized. This point is never static. It slides across surfaces, dissolves, reappears, multiplies. The dancers trace invisible lines through space, lines that curve with the spine, fracture at joints, and spiral through rolling weight transfers. The geometry here is relational: angles are felt, not measured; trajectories are discovered rather than planned -- In Contact Improvisation, dancers do not fight gravity but converse with it. Falling becomes a method of travel, and yielding becomes a source of strength. Verticality and horizontality are not opposites but phases of a continuum. A lift is less an act of elevation than a redirection of force, a temporary agreement between bodies and the earth. In this sense, the dance constructs a dynamic topology—surfaces fold into one another, centers shift, and what was once “up” becomes “around." “Geometry of Sensing Bodies” names a practice where structure is alive and perception is creative. Contact Improvisation reminds us that bodies are not objects moving through space but fields of sensation shaping space as they move. Its geometry is written in pressure and release, in trust and risk, in the continuous drawing and redrawing of relationships. To witness or practice it is to see thinking made physical—and to feel geometry breathe." ---------------------------------------- What is Contact Improvisation : Contact Improvisation (CI) is a postmodern dance practice that explores movement through shared weight, touch, and physical awareness. Originating in the United States in 1972, contact improvisation was developed by dancer and choreographer Steve Paxton, drawing on influences from modern dance, aikido, and somatic practices. Contact Improvisation emphasizes the interplay of gravity, momentum, and improvisation, fostering an experimental approach to movement that invites both professional dancers and newcomers into its global community. With time the technique and practice of this movement form spread across Europe, Asia & Americas, growing into an international community of practitioners. CI is a dynamic and expressive dance form that transcends traditional boundaries, inviting participants into a unique exploration of movement, connection, and self-discovery. Notable dancers and founders: Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith, Lisa Nelson. Alertness is developed in order to work in an energetic state of physical disorientation, trusting in one's basic survival instincts. It is a free play with balance, self-correcting the wrong moves and reinforcing the right ones, bringing forth a physical/emotional truth about a shared moment of movement that leaves the participants informed, centered, and enlivened." *— early definition by **Steve Paxton** and others, 1970s, from CQ Vol. 5:1, Fall 1979* ------------------------------------- About the Facilitator --> Valentyn Korotkevych (@valevych) is a Ukrainian-Canadian somatic therapy practitioner, spoken word and movement artist. His work integrates Polyvagal theory, Deep Tissue Massage, and poetry of being an active body-mind- connected system. As a masseuse & dancer, he has facilitated & provided his services across Europe and Asia. His approach to CI (Contact Improvisation) lies in the root of introspection, contemplation & fundamental feeling of honesty, inclusivity & mutual care. Valentyn studied, lived & pursued the cinematic art media in Canada for 7+ years, creating & receiving recognition for his subtle independent films while discovering his identity in the medium of combined art-movement-therapy-poetry in motion of life & modern pursuit for balanced being. As a dancer, he was lucky to pursue the consistent dream of deciphering the form of movement & somatics of body-mind through retreats, classes, events & workshops across Finland, Austria, Moldova, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey, Thailand, S Korea, Honk Kong, Macao, China (Guangzhou), Vietnam & Japan. ------------------------------------- Full Description of the Workshop --> https://drive.google.com/file/d/17YV7REIRNW4VUI7G673Be827KUznXvH7/view?usp=sharing
