About this Event

The Underscore is a long-form dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith. It has been evolving since 1990 and is practiced all over the globe. It is a vehicle for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising. It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states. Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable. The practice progresses through a broad range of dynamic states, including long periods of very small, private, and quiet internal activity and other times of higher energy and interactive dancing. The GLOBAL UNDERSCORE (GUS) is a yearly event in which dancers all over the world practice the Underscore simultaneously. One element that makes the GUS practice different from a regular Underscore is the Facings. The Facings will consist of two 5-minute Stands/Small Dances (a focus on standing developed by Steve Paxton), that create a spiral that circles the earth 3 times. The Facings are a way to connect Underscore dancers around the world doing a specific action at the same time. #1 FACING EAST Dancers do the 1st Facing facing a GUS site to the East. #2 FACING WEST Dancers do the 2nd Facing, during the final 5 minutes facing a GUS site to the West. To participate in an Underscore, one should have some experience of Contact Improvisation and attend a talk-through of the Underscore, which will take place at the beginning (17.00 hs). Participants come on time and stay for the duration of the event. Pay what you can. Suggested is kr 100-150.
