If you are more experienced, you will pick up the technical fine points that make the difference between a functional understanding and a refined understanding. We will cover the fundamental building blocks on which all zouk is built including the forward back basic, rotating basic, caminando, veredinha, lateral, lunge, and simple turn. We'll get into specific details about where to shift your weight, how to communicate direction and distance, and where pivots and rotations need to happen in order for the movements to feel smooth and controlled. BREATHE! Friday 3/10, 7-9p Kimberly Loo Studio This class will be all about the way the quality of breath drives the quality of movement and brings it to life. We will discover how to use the physical aspects of expanding and contracting the body and the way we can change the feeling of a movement with our breath. We can create flowing relaxed movement, sustained movement, sharp movement, and a sense of interpersonal connection by being conscious and intentional in our breathing. Social Dancing at Mambo Room 9-Midnight $10 Cover CLARITY Saturday 3/11, 7-10pm, Polearity This class will focus on two important technical subjects: limit and base. Limits are the ability to communicate clearly where movements start and end in space. This is the foundation of good lead-follow communication. Base encompasses your relationship to the floor as a dancer. Understanding your base allows you to know where your and your partner's alignment and balance are, and what each other need in order to be supported. A strong understanding of base makes the dance comfortable and stable through transitions and dynamic changes. Understanding base and limit builds trust between partners and opens the door for more creative possibilities. CREATE Sunday 3/12, 7-9pm, Polearity With some technical fundamentals under our belts, now it is time for play and joy in our dancing. This class will give you some tools and techniques to bring creativity into your dancing, and to play and experiment without worrying that “you’re doing it wrong.” We will play with bringing different dynamics and qualities into familiar movements, and finding space for individual expression within a partnered context. Most of all, we will give each other permission to find what is fun and inspiring in each dance. Having taken first place in the 2015 Zouk US Open, they are sharing Brazilian Zouk across the United States. Biki have been dancing together for four years and are known for their electric chemistry on the dance floor. Biki have recently returned from intensive training in Brazil, studying the Rio style of zouk with the form's creator, Renata Pecanha among other world class instructors. Ben has a movement background in martial arts, blues dance, and salsa. He is a leader in the Seattle zouk community: organizing events, teaching classes, and leading a performance team. Kiki brings over 20 years of experience in modern dance, ballet, and jazz and award-winning choreography to the partnership. She is also a professional scholar, exploring the relationship between society, dance, and innovation. ===ABOUT HONOLULU ZOUK=== Kimberly Loo founded Honolulu Zouk in 2015 as a vehicle for creating a dance family around teaching, performing, and choreographing Brazilian Zouk fused with other dances. Her dance philosophy is based around a desire for each dancer to celebrate awareness of their bodies, and to find joy in connecting with themselves, accepting their sensuality and ability to express themselves through movement. The Honolulu Zouk logo emphasizes how 'ono (delicious) zouk is, and how its dancers love to zouk always and all ways. Kimberly's teaching style is influenced by her ballet background and accepting of nonheteronormative dance roles. In its first year, Honolulu Zouk was invited to perform for "zouk royalty" at Zouk Night Love in Mexico and received a standing ovation! They have been gracing the Hawaiian Islands and the mainland US with dance instruction and dazzling performances every since! Honolulu Zouk is comprised of several performance teams, a weekly zouk fusion social, ongoing technique classes, and frequent visiting instructors. Dance was one of her three majors at university, alongside English and Anthropology; her Bachelor's degree in Dance with a Performance and Choreography emphasis from Pomona College in California alongside a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification from Mahatma Yoga in India. Kimberly's formal training encompasses ballet, jazz, modern, international ballroom, salsa, bachata, and her favorite, Brazilian Zouk. Kimberly has twice won collegiate championships in International Ballroom (both Latin and Standard), the Hawaii Salsa Championship, won runner up at the Texas Salsa Open, placed in several BZDC Strictly Zouk and Zouk Jack & Jills, and has been invited to perform and teach throughout the Aloha state and in California, Texas, Mexico, Morocco, and India. Her dance career as a performer has spanned from the commercial to the burlesque. Kimberly actively pursues spreading the warm fuzzy feelings of dance to every audience and every social dance partner she encounters, and founded Honolulu Zouk to create a dance family around this love. ===LOCATION=== Polearity Studio 111 N.
