IMPRO MURGA

Murga is a dance form associated with Latin America and Carnival. The music is percussion heavy with the bombo, redoblante and platillos and the lyrical content is often a political commentary of popular resistance, for this reason it was repressed during the dictatorship of 1976-83. The alleged Andalusian origin of the Murga is a site of contention, many believe this as a constructed myth to support eurocentrism and colonisation in Argentina. Many carnival traditions are intrinsically linked to African slave descendents, the Murga is linked with the Christian pagan Carinival as perhaps the only moment where an outlet of freedom of expression was granted. The Argentine Murga is a form that encourages visibility and dissent of oppressive systems of power while also remaining complex in its colonial history as a potential instrument for white washing history. We will learn elements of the Argentine Murga as it is practiced today and combine this with dance improvisation scores and percussion, while asking- what does dissent mean for you today and how does this dance transform your energetic state? Moss has interpreted the works This Variation, This Joy, This Ornation, for artist Tino Sehgal since 2012 and has performed at the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin, the History of Art Museum,Vienna, Tate Modern, UK etc. She has worked with Sheena McGrandles, Claire Vivianne Sabotke, Michael Portnoy, Javier Cura, Christine Borch, Nwando Ebizie, Jonathan Grieve, T9, David Moss, Miriam(Mono) Welke, Hana Tefrati, Shayma Shoukry, Oily Cart Theatre, Clod Ensemble, Para Active. Moss was a former member of MAS in London, whose ritual-theatre art and visual sci-art experiences merged secular ritual art practices, pop music, virtual reality technology and neurodiversity. Moss is researching her new work on oration, dance, performance and musicality, integrating practices of intimacy and somatic body and voice work to explore embodied politics and neurodiversity with the support from Fonds Daku, & DIS TANZEN. Sebastian Traverso Since 2000 Sebastián Traverso participates in the carnival of Argentina, through the murga porteña, touring different neighborhoods and cities. He has been part of different styles of murga; "Murga la venganza de los pobres", Mar del Plata. "Centro Murga Fantasía Arrabalera", Mar del Plata. "Murga Desorbitados", Mar del Plata". "Centro Murga Los Desconocidos de Siempre", Almagro, Buenos Aires. "La Carnavalera", Buenos Aires. "Centro Murga Los Dandys de Boedo", Boedo, Buenos Aires. These collective associations are part of the new generation of murgueros, preserving the tradition inherited by the old murgueros. Taking this dance as a way of life allows an escape route and a healthy alternative to the different social problems that are arising in the times we live in. The murga encourages the exchange between people of different social classes and of all ages and helps as a support structure for young people with social problems through discipline and respect.
