It's Hokey Pokey Time! Don the Togs with Swing On In

C’Mon Kids, Don the Togs, Grab the Sunbrella and your Coppertone and get down to Coolangatta for Cooly Rocks On Festival Friday 7th of June at 10.00am on the Greenmount Stage where Chrissy & Ray from Swing On In Dance School (www.swingonin.com.au) as they host another Fabulous celebration of our Beach Culture, Our History and YES... The Hokey Pokey (Hand Jiving fun) We will be hosting the re-enactment of Doug Roughtons Famous Hokey Pokey Time! WE NEED YOU!!! Just bring your bodies, fun and laughter and we will guide you through the history and dance which will also, in turn, entice the general public to come and join in with us... Lots of media will be there so get involved and let out Vintage Lovin, All Dancing scene shine... Remember the song “It’s Hot in Brisbane but Cool an gatta”? Well, this is one of the originals that will be playing to your pleasure on this amazing fun day we have planned for you! Very Rare and hardly ever heard but the City of the Gold Coast bought the rights to play for you on this day! the song was written and produced by Doug Roughton to play during his Hokey Pokey sessions. Other tunes that will be beating out on the day that Doug Roughton used to play are from some of the most popular artists of the day including Frankie Laine, Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby, Lois Armstrong and Tommy Dorsey....YES you can dance dance dance!!! A bit of what its all about: In the 1950’s Doug Roughton was famous for calling what he called "The Hokey Pokey" He used to say: C'mon Gang, It's Hokey Pokey Time... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLe2nweFUIk) Did you know though that this is where the Hand Jive Originated (Via Wikipedia) In 1957 when filmmaker Ken Russell was a freelance photographer, he recorded the teenagers of Soho, London hand-jiving in the basement of The Cat's Whisker coffee bar, where the hand-jive was invented. According to an article in the Daily Mirror "it's so crowded the girls hand-jive to the band as there's no room for dancing." Russell told interviewer Leo Benedictus of The Guardian that "the place was crowded with young kids... the atmosphere was very jolly, Wholesome, everyone jiving with their hands because there was precious little room to do it with their feet... a bizarre sight. The craze fascinated me. It seemed like a strange novelty; I used to join in." For the practice run we will have all dancers on stages teaching/demonstrating to general public how to do the hand jive then you will form your teams...There will be teams/circles of kids sitting cross legged in boy/girl/boy/girl formation and the best, most outrageously happy hand jivers will win...Go wild, go crazy and be creative!! To give you a hint... Dough Roughton once awarded the winning double scoop icecream to a man for speaking most enthusiastically to the girl beside him...!
