About this Event
JEREMY HALE WORKSHOPS
Sunday September 1, 2019 at Polearity
6-9pm Workshops, 9-11p Social
International instructor Jeremy Hale focuses on zouk’s foundational tenets of connecting and listening to ourselves and our partners, physically and energetically. Workshops will build on safety, respect, exploration, curiosity, creativity, efficiency, comfort, cooperation, and community.
6:00-7:30p Axes of Motion + Vacuums & Barriers - Explore the different possible directions of movement within the body and through space. Then, focus on the lead/follow relationship and how, as a leader, to invite the follower along a certain path without any force or effort, and how, as a follower, to seek the pathways offered by the leader and move effortlessly along that path.
7:30-9p The Calm Before the Boom - Become a lead/follow whisperer! Roll into a quiet frame. Communicate directly and clearly with our partner's center of gravity. Guide the direction of travel in space with confidence. Use the perfect lull before we take a step: the calm before the boom!
9-11p Social with DJ Javi & DJ Nico Suave Each week we have a different sake available for tasting, though we do ask that dancers stay sober when dancing. Dancers often bring light pupu to share :) Our classes and social are in a welcoming dance studio in Chinatown, with a dedicated parking lot, ample mirrors, and the flattest zouk dancefloor in town! Zouk is a dance for everyone, of all ages and bodies and sexualities. Our classes and party are family-friendly--children are welcome to stay in the lounge or take classes.

UNIVERSE BEHIND THE HUG: GUI & KELSEY
https://www.facebook.com/events/2245309795565613/
August 24-26, 2019
It doesn’t matter how long we’ve been dancing, we all have experienced dances that made us wish the song was over as soon as possible. More usual than that is the experience of a dance that doesn’t feel right, is awkward, uncomfortable and sometimes hurts. There may be several reasons for these things to happen, but certainly the most common ones are lack of attention to one’s own body and to the partner, the lack of physical and, consequently, emotional connection, usually observed in taking for granted simple and basic elements like walking together and the hug.The hug is fundamental in almost all Brazilian dances, and if done well you can do basics for the entire night and you will have an awesome experience! This is because it has the power to create an indescribable feeling of comfort, safety and care that can go beyond dance and reach more profound layers of our beings. There is an entire universe behind the dance hug, embracing several aspects of our lives: how we were raised, how we perceive the other, how we see ourselves as dancers, why we dance and what we want to accomplish in this amazing form of art. All these issues affect the way we approach dance and the people we dance with and, as a direct consequence, the way we physically connect through the hug. Connection works on three main layers: physical, emotional and spiritual. Exploring the universe behind the hug helps us fill the connection void created by our busy lives in all those layers and understand how our entire body reacts positively to the meaningful contact of another person. In other words, the exploration of this universe can lead to the discovery of an incredible tool on our search for joy in our dancing. We can actually learn how to create a comfortable, meaningful hug that will make our dancing experience mutually satisfying, and more than that will help us see the other person as someone who deserves nothing more than care and love. During this workshop we will learn the physical and mental principles behind the comfortable, meaningful hug and how to apply them to every single person we dance with, no matter the level, height or mood. We will also explore a different mindset towards social dancing -- one that is primarily focused on the other and turning ourselves into instruments of the other’s well being and happiness, at least for the duration of two, three, ten or even thirty songs. We cannot go deep into connecting with someone without mastering our body’s movement first. Unlike the other layers, connecting on the physical level is not something you can avoid. Therefore, in this workshop we will explore the limits and potentialities of our bodies and how we can work to move together as comfortably as possible.
Saturday:
Building the Hug – The Physical Layer
2:00PM - 6:00PM: Building the Hug
Explore physical elements and concepts, such as "awakening the body," attention, balance, weight transfer, torso and hips connection, shoulders, head and hands contact and use, as well as pressure with layers of connection.
Saturday night social:
9:00pm-12:00am
This party is free to pass holders and $10 to all others.
SUNDAY:
6-9pm
Building the Mindset – Going into deeper layers. On our second day we will focus on building the mindset to create an amazing dancing experience. We will talk about and exercise empathy, patience and interdependency. In addition, we will explore the concept of the “absent presence”, the use of though, emotion and feeling and how basic tantra teachings can help us provide and receive great dances.
9-12am Sunday night Social! Free to pass holders and $10 to all others.

===ABOUT HONOLULU ZOUK===
Kimberly Loo founded Honolulu Zouk in 2015 as a vehicle for creating a dance family around teaching, performing, and choreographing Brazilian Zouk, celebrating its fusion with other dances. Her dance philosophy is based around a desire for each dancer to celebrate awareness of their bodies, and to find joy in connecting with themselves, accepting their sensuality and ability to express themselves through movement. The Honolulu Zouk logo emphasizes how 'ono (delicious) zouk is, and how its dancers love to zouk always and all ways. Kimberly's teaching style is influenced by her technical ballet background and her love of yoking in metaphors. The school is welcoming of nonheteronormative dance roles.
In its first year, Honolulu Zouk was invited to perform for "zouk royalty" at Zouk Night Love in Mexico and received a standing ovation! They have been gracing the Hawaiian Islands and North America with dance instruction and dazzling performances ever since!
Honolulu Zouk is comprised of several performance teams, progressive social dance training courses, a heels dance team, a weekly zouk social, ongoing drop in technique classes, monthly fusion evens, and frequent intensive courses with renowned international instructors. We host beginner classes on Sundays and once a month on 2nd Thursday and 1st Saturday. Please contact [email protected] and come join the family or if you're interested in a performance!
