Not since the late, great SE Rogie, has there been a truly notable recording of palm wine music from Sierra Leone… but guitarist extraordinaire, Abdul Tee-Jay, best known as leader of the electric Sierra Leone dance music group Rokoto, has broken this musical fast. On a diet of ‘milo jazz’, Ghanaian/Nigerian High-life, Guinean Bembeya Jazz,Congolese Soukous the traditional street music of his home in Freetown and even Appalachian Hillbilly music, whilst studying in West Virginia – he has grown to create something uplifting, unique, and inspiring. After playing in various bands, including African Connection and African Culture, in 1988 he formed the groundbreaking ROKOTO, with the mission to evolve a modern Sierra Leonian music. // Rokoto achieved considerable success, touring the world and playing to packed houses and releasing three acclaimed albums, including E'Go Lef Pan You… Now he is back shaking London, just like you will not be able to help but shake the floors!
