She first danced publicly in the Soca nights back in the 1990s, when she amazed many with her natural ability to move to the beat. Neelam's thirst for dancing next led her to Salsa in 2003, which soon became her all-consuming social dance passion. In 2006, Neelam went to the Ruby Blue nightclub with her Cabo-Verdian friend who showed her the dance ‘Passada' from his country Cabo Verde. At the beginning she was hesitant to experience such a close contact dance, but Neelam enjoyed the music and it was not long before she was smoothly gliding into the depths of the kizomba dance. She was steered into the dance with the encouragement of palop community, and soon became a fluid and natural dancer. Neelam says she owes thanks to the palop community for accepting her, particularly her friend of Angolan heritage, Claudio Nelson Freitas Araujo (aka ‘Mr Nino’), who gave Neelam the title ‘Indigola’. The tragic death of her brother inspired Neelam to take on kizomba full-time in 2008 as a way of accessing therapeutic healing. Her connection with kizomba in this way is what has led Neelam to develop such a passion and respect for the dance and culture. Her deeply felt passion for the dance is communicated in how she is able to intuit and demonstrate what ‘connection’ and ‘flow’ really mean. As a naturally gifted, artistic and passionate dancer, Neelam has become increasingly known for her ability to creatively interpret and effortlessly follow any lead with grace and precision, which has made her a pleasure to watch and dance with. In 2009 Neelam was asked to join Kizomba United Kingdom and taught alongside them for a year, which became her springboard to becoming a well-recognised figure within the UK kizomba scene. Soon Neelam found herself living and breathing kizomba, knowing every dance palop club In London, and eventually working with other kizomba promoters to help bring the Western world into the community. Because of her contributions to the pioneering of kizomba in the UK and Europe, and continually spreading her love for the dance, she soon began to be recognised as one of London's top leads and follows in both kizomba and semba. Since then, Neelam has been honoured for her contributions to kizomba. She was in the top finals of the best Kizomba teacher in the Lukas Awards in 2 years running from 2012 and was in the finals for the London Africadancar 2009. This acknowledgement has contributed to the confidence and the contagious smile she is renowned for. Her peers showed their respect for her by inviting her to judge at the Paris Africadancar 2010 finals. And, having then become the founder and CEO of Kizomba Family 2010, Neelam opened her night in London, where some of the best dancers have visited and have since become teachers themselves. In 2014, when Neelam visited Vancouver, she fell in love with the country and soon noticed that Vancouver needed a boost to its nascent kizomba scene. She returned to Vancouver in 2015 to contribute to the scene, forming Vancouver Kizomba & Bachata Nights in April 2015, which quickly became popular. In October 2015, Neelam opened Vancouver's first kizomba nightclub, called ‘Casa Do Kizomba’. Neelam is the first Asian female kizomba teacher in the world, and she is very proud of her heritage and the heritage of kizomba. For her, kizomba means healing, health and growth, and nothing makes her happier than when her students ‘get it’.
