ABOUT KIZOMBA Kizomba, meaning 'party,' is an African partner dance from Angola. Experienced in Angola at backyard barbecues and family gatherings, kizomba brings people together. Characterized as an improvised, circular walking dance, the image of kizomba is reminiscent of a hug. As a teacher from the Western world, I do my best to continually learn, in order to represent this beautiful dance, and speak to the music and culture, in the best way that I can. I incorporate instruction on grounded body movement and stepping, in order to help students understand the complexities behind the beautiful movements, and I share what I can about the historical and cultural context of this dance and music. ABOUT ASHBY LAINE Hi there, lovely Boulder people. My name is Ashby! I am from Virginia, though I've been spending a lot of time in Boulder over the last three years, coming into what I can my 'adventure queendom' (basically, trying things I never did when I lived by the flat coast). I have been teaching Kizomba, Semba and body movement all over the globe for about 10 years. I started a Kizomba community in Virginia when living there, and love to prioritize supporting local dance communities in my teaching travels. I continue to travel to teach, but call Boulder one of my 'homes.' If enough people are interested, I would love to offer kizomba series on a more regular basis.
