La Rumba Buena 3-Year Anniversary w Rich Medina

It’s been quite a journey so far, Rumber@s. When we first started Rumba (3 years ago!), we envisioned throwing a party every few months (if we were lucky). That first jam was on a freezing February night in 2016, and that first night was so magical that we had a party the next month…and then the next…and then… And now we’re three years deep. It’s been an honour and a pleasure. And to celebrate our anniversary (and all the love, and friendships, and family that come together every month), La Rumba is going BIG for our 3rd anniversary. We’re bringing up the one and only Rich Medina as our guest, all the way from Philly, for a rare Latin-focused vinyl night from the man himself. Rich is an internationally renowned DJ who, in the thirty-plus years since he spun his first record, has turned his love of music into a celebrated career as a platinum-selling record producer and recording artist. Known for his legendary sets for Fania Records, residences at Lil’ Ricky’s Rib Shack in NY, and his Afrobeat night Jump N Funk, he’s also worked with artists as diverse as Antibalas, Osunlade, Dilla, Jill Scott, and Bobbito (just to name a few). Rich is a sonic storyteller par excellence, and we’re incredibly lucky to have him play a unique set for us. It’s going to be a journey (to a beautiful musical place). Expect to hear Salsa, Boogaloo, Cumbia, Guaguanco, Son, Rumba, Descargas, Mambo, Cha-Cha-Cha, Bomba, and Plena from the resident DJs. With a stack of vinyl collected over a decade from across the Americas, DJs Blancon and Drumspeak play out the sounds from the Latin Diaspora and bring La Rumba Buena to Toronto.
