LA CI is proud to present: (more) Intelligent (more) Recklessness a long weekend workshop with Anya Cloud & Eric Geiger Friday - Sunday November 10th-12th Los Angeles, CA This is the event of the fall in LA CI! Three days of dancing over the Veteran's Day long holiday weekend with Anya Cloud. Building from a long standing practice called Intelligent Recklessness, we will cultivate queer wildness in our dancing bodies. We will expand the possibilities of what a contact improvisation dance can be through intimately being in the unknown together. We will work with soft collisions, momentum, flying, falling, interdependence, agency, We will work with dancing as a high-risk practice that activates bravery, collective care, chaos, transformation, specificity, accountability, and more. We will question, we will research, and we will play. We will dance with the bodies that we have as the people we are. The work will be physical, challenging, exhilarating, and accessible to dancers and improvisers of all backgrounds. [email protected] Biographies Anya Cloud (she/they) I am originally from Alaska, and currently living between Berlin and Colorado. As a queer white person I orient my work to cultivate radical aliveness as an artist-activist practice. Intersectional collaboration is central to my work. I have been practicing contact improvisation for 20 years and regularly teach, practice, and perform internationally. I orient with contact improvisation as a fundamentally queer form. I am devoted to practicing, researching, teaching, and performing experimental contemporary dance, contact improvisation, and somatics through anti-oppression methodologies. My work has been produced/supported by Movement Research at the Judson, Tanzfabrik, Dock 11, Workshop Foundation, ImPulsTanz, freeskewl, La MaMa, Los Angeles PerformancePractice, REDCAT, Tanzquartier, SFDI, WCCI Jam, The Field Center, and Guatemala Department of Culture among others. I co-direct The Love Makers, a project-based experimental dance company, with Makisig Akin. I have worked with and/or performed for Sara Shelton Mann, Nancy Stark Smith, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Karen Schaffman, Eric Geiger, Karen Nelson, and Nhu Nguyen among others. I hold an MFA in Dance Theatre and trained in the Feldenkrais Method® under the direction of Elizabeth Beringer. I am currently Assistant Professor of Dance at University of Colorado Boulder. Eric Geiger (he/him) I dance and make dances in an attempt to make sense of the world around me. I was a member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company where I also taught and served as choreographic assistant to Bill. As a member of The Lyon Opera Ballet, I performed in works by William Forsythe, Stephen Petronio, Susan Marshall, Maguy Marin, and Angelin Preljocaj. Contact Improvisation, being directed by Deborah Hay, and my training as a Feldenkrais practitioner has transformed my capacity as a mover and a maker. I recently left my faculty position of 14 years at UCSD, where I guided practices that question what dance is and can be. As a dancemaker, I am a collaborator. I’ve made dances with Anya Cloud, Karen Schaffman, Liam Clancy, Leslie Seiters, and Jess Humphrey. I’m questioning the politics that are emerging from my practices and creative research. Not by way in which the work itself represents, acts, or dances out a political situation, social injustice or inequity, but by attempting to create a context in which the value system of the process, as well as the systemic structure of the work is the actual, desired change.
