About this Event

The Peabody is a ballroom dance that originated in the ragtime era, but you can dance it to all kinds of jazz age and swing era music - it is particularly useful for those songs that feel too fast, because you are taking fewer steps than your Lindy Hop and Balboa counterparts! If you never want to sit out a song because of tempo, you should come learn Peabody with us. It's a fun and simple dance to learn the basics - if you can walk, you can Peabody. The class is $15, we will take cash, PayPal to [email protected], or Venmo to @Laura-Windley. Please arrive a few minutes before the class starts at 7:00 p.m. to get yourself situated, paid, shoes on, and ready to go. The Peabody is named for a NY police lieutenant, William Frank Peabody, who loved to dance and adapted the popular foxtrot to fit his larger size. We are teaching this in anticipation of the Roaring Raleigh Lawn Party on October 26, to give you some more tools to dance to the 1920's music that will be DJ'ed (you already know how how to dance to the 1930's music!). As our knowledge of the Peabody is basic, we will be keeping this lesson very basic and give you the tools, like many other swing dances, to do some basic steps and encourage you to play with variations of turns and moves that you already know. What does a super awesome version of the Peabody look like? Check out this video of Sandra Cameron and Paul Grecki from 1991 looking fabulous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VOFkpsxuv0
