About this Event

Quick details: 8PM - 10PM at Redwood Raks, this Friday (March 31). $0 Cover, donations accepted. Everyone is welcome, though we won't be teaching basics. -------- Welcome to the first (hopefully there will be more) Lindy Lab! This is a concept I've been meaning to make happen for a few years and am finally getting around to running. The idea is to take a move or concept in Lindy Hop and spend an hour or two breaking it down and workshopping it as much as we can. This workshop style class will focus on the Lindy Basic. If you know the Lindy Basic you are qualified to attend, and if you don't know it feel free to come sit in on the class anyway! You'll probably be able to pick it up over the course of the class as you watch. I will not be instructing on basic footwork but we will be talking about our feet! Here's an outline of how I expect the class to go: 1) We'll all say hi and dance a song to warm up and get into our bodies. 2) We'll all do about half a song of only Lindy basics and come out of it into a discussion. I'll want actual conversation and feedback from the group, so come ready to talk! I'll guide the discussion but I want everyone there to bring something to the class if they can. 3) We'll find one thing from the discussion we want to work on, have a quick talk about what about it we want to examine, and go back to dancing only our basics for another section of a song. We'll come out of the song to discuss what we found. 4) We'll repeat this process with whatever comes up. I'll also introduce topics I want to discuss and I'll bring exercises to discuss them. Here are some examples of what I want to try to talk about: - Where are we connected during our basic, and what can we communicate with that connection? - What kinds of momentum does each part of the partnership have during different points of the basic? How can we modify that and play with it? How does that affect our partner? - How does the basic feel different in fast vs slow songs. what types of options do we have for the move in those tempos? - How can we play with direction in our basic? Can we under-rotate? over-rotate? what does a basic look like with as little rotation as possible? - What parts of the basic can we make room for other movements in? Without doing something like a turn or a spin, how can we modify our footwork, momentum, or connection while keeping what we are doing in our conception of a basic? - What styles of Lindy Hop can inform our basic? Can we talk about Hollywood style? Savoy Style? (though I want to be careful in my use of those terms!) This event will have no cover, but if you want to donate something to help pay for the space, it would be appreciated. Any revenue we generate from the event will go back to Redwood Raks!
