About this Event

We welcome you to come celebrate with us a Washington DC original tradition, Mambo Fridays DC, on our 1 year anniversary! We've gone through a very interesting year! We made a lot of memories, danced a whole lot, got kicked out of our old venue, and now we're housed in our new home at Local 16 DC with one of the greatest venue owners in our city, BACK on the same street where mambo all started in Washington DC! On our 1 year anniversary, we have favorites Chris Flores aka DJ Flo and Stephen Greene aka DJ Steve Greene battling head to head in a mambo battle royale, fit for the Capital City of the United States! Music starts at 10pm. We will be going till 2:30am. Dress code for the night is fashionable late-night mambo evening attire. PRESS "GOING" FOR THIS GUEST LIST: - $10 B4 MIDNIGHT *with* FB check-in - $15 after midnight Mambo began in Washington, DC on U St 70 years ago. And in a time where salsa/mambo continues to be pushed further out into the suburbs, our mission is to keep salsa/mambo alive and kicking in downtown DC! We are committed to keeping the mambo tradition ALIVE in Washington DC! MAMBO: "The word mambo was likely being used in the New World as soon as the Bakongo people arrived in the sixteenth century... basically, mambo means a complex of things involving communication - all of which, in traditional Bantu culture, involved singing. Arsenio Rodriguez, who claimed to have invented the modern musical style called mambo, and whose grandfather was Congo, told Cuban musicologist Odilio Urfe: "The word mambo is African, of the Congo dialect. One singer says to the other: abre cuto güiri mambo, that is: 'open your ear and listen to what I'm going to tell you.'" Or, in the argot of the 1980s: word up." - Ned Sublette, Cuba and its Music. See you this Friday, KEEP ON DANCING!!!
