March Son Party a.k.a. Noche Bailable

Son (meaning "sound", frequently connoted as rhythm) is a style of music and dance that first gained popularity in Cuba in the late '20s and '30s, combining elements from earlier African and Iberian music traditions. It is the foundation of a variety of Latin American music forms including the widely popular music and dance known as "timba" or "salsa" (the latter a term coined in America in the '70s). Related music and dances include son montuno, danzón, and cha cha chá, from which several other music and dance forms have been derived over the years. Pioneering bands of these genres include Conjunto Chappottin, Septeto Nacional, and Orquesta Aragón, among others. The movement to preserve son was portrayed in the hit '99 film The Buena Vista Social Club. In the SF Bay area, The Cuban Music Project (http://www.thecubanmusicproject.com) strives to educate and preserve the rich tradition of Cuban music and dance, and the Son Party a.k.a. Noche Bailable is a recurring party to highlight this beautiful art form. Get together with a nice group of folks who love to listen and dance to the richness that is Cuban music old and new.
