BACKGROUND Mate or maté is also known as chimarrão or cimarrón, is a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink from a bitter herb called yerba mate. The matè drink has an extensive history and a wealth of rituals and customs surrounding its consumption in Argentine. It is traditionally served with a metal straw (bombilla) in a container typically made from a calabash gourd.
