[email protected] Biography: Melanie Castillo, born and raised in New York, is known for her powerful footwork and her presence on the dance floor. Being half Puerto Rican and half Dominican, music and dance was the norm growing up. She began her formal training at the age of 5 at Rising Stars Dance Studio in Queens, NY. It was there she was introduced to ballet, jazz, tap, and other forms of dance. In 2004, Melanie auditioned to go to Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, which had a prominent dance program, and was accepted. In 2009, Melanie began taking salsa classes at the Lorenz Latin Dance Studio in Glendale, Queens. After leaving Lorenz, Melanie started to work with Sekou Mcmiller, Nelson Flores, and Anya Katsevman. In 2011, she started competing with Elvis Collado and worked with Tito and Tamara, and Billy Fajardo. During that same year she co-founded Las Damas and began working with Ismael Otero and Caribbean Soul. Melanie was also head instructor and choreographer at the Salsa Sensation Dance Studio in Long Island, NY. While competing she took first place in 3 well known competitions, IHSC 2012, NYISC 2012, WSS Just Dance Division 2013. In 2012, she started her own dance team, Candela Dance Company, while at the same time teaching at Rhythmology in Long Island. In 2013, Melanie began teaching at Balmir Latin Dance studio in Brooklyn and Piel Canela Latin Dance and Music school in Manhattan. Currently, Melanie Castillo exclusively works with Elvis Collado, Las Damas, and Candela Dance Company. Her weekly classes, now at Balmir and with Elvis Collado, continue to attract salsa dancers, of all levels,that want to take their dancing to the next level.
