About this Event
This topic shifts the focus away from how you walk and onto the different ways you can organize movement with a partner. These systems—Parallel, Cross, and “Lazy” Ochos—form the structural backbone of tango. Parallel System is the default, where partners move on opposite feet and navigate space cleanly across multiple tracks. Cross System introduces complexity by having both partners move on the same foot, creating new entry points, exits, and directional possibilities. “Lazy” Ochos extend this further by crossing the body’s natural line, producing diagonal movement without relying on traditional vocabulary. However, this isn’t your ordinary parallel, cross, and lazy ocho idea. Trust that there are more than a few ideas here that will literally break your brain.
Together, these systems are not “steps” but movement frameworks that replace the need for patterns. They allow dancers to solve navigation, create variation, and build an entire dance using nothing more than walking. By combining and switching between systems, dancers develop versatility and the ability to generate movement in real time, turning simple forward and backward steps into a complete improvisational language.
