ABOUT OUR TEACHER, MIRA BARAKAT. We are delighted to invite famed local tango instructor Mira Barakat to Empanada Milonga for the very first time for a 1 hour all-level workshop for both leaders and followers. Mira teaches locally privately and at workshops, and has been teaching and performing tango since 2006 when she lived in Buenos Aires. She is a global performer, dancing solo and with such groups as Tango Con*Fusion, and co-leads a tango retreat to Buenos Aires every year. Those who have taken her local tango classes rave about her teaching, with her care, precision, and understanding of tango dynamics as a leader and follower. As she says "For me, Tango is about connection - to ourselves, our partners, and the music. I feel deeply passionate about this dance and I love sharing this with my students and community." ABOUT OUR BAND, CUARTETO RAMILONGA (at Empanada Milonga after Mira's workshop) Truly our favorite band in the San Francisco Bay Area, not often heard, but founded 10 years ago by long-time tango maestro and bandoneonist Julian Ramil, his unbelievably talented 20 year-old son Diego Ramil, long-time Bay Area tango bassist Greg Kehret, and for this Sunday, a special guest star, Polina from St. Petersburg who is in San Francisco as a guest artist with the San Francisco Symphony. Cuarteto Ramilonga blends perfectly the traditional sound of the Buenos Aires tango quartet performing golden-era tango of the 30's - 60's. It's been a year since they've been back to Berkeley, and we can't wait to dance to their great music! Empanada Milonga is truly blessed to have such great talent teaching us and performing for us at our beautiful venue. See you all there, Sunday January 12, 2025!
