This workshop is open and offers tools and new ideas for all curious movers, interested in dance, contact improvisation, partnering, co-creation or somatics. DESCRIPTION: This workshop is the first in a series of events called ‘Moving Horizons’. It is a collaboration between dance artists Alexandre Mendes and Catrin Kaitaro, focused on improvisation and co-creation in dance. In this workshop, we will bring together some material from our artistic and pedagogical experience gathered over the years with professionals from various parts of the world. Our work derives from our experience and research in contact improvisation, but also draws inspiration from our backgrounds in contemporary dance, martial arts and other somatic practises. Exploring spirals and spherical movement will be our starting point for becoming aware of the infinity of possibilities in each moment, listening and creating dances together. Solo, in pairs and in groups, we will practice moving in connection with each other through space and in contact, experiencing how movement travels through space and from one body to another. We will introduce also some work with objects (balls or belts), using them to learn about the spiraling structure of our body, exploring what kind of new pathways and qualities the relation to the object can lead us to. For the last hour (lab time) we will propose a structure that will be focused on contact dance improvisation based on the integration of the content given during the day. FACILITATORS: Alexandre Mendes and Catrin Kaitaro have been sharing dances together since 2021. At the moment they are collaborating to explore the place of contact improvisation in their artistic practice and the possibilities it opens for choreographic work. Both have also many years experience as facilitators in various contexts and and the coming year they will also be co-teaching workshops to share their passion for movement together. For both of them, it is important to create a safe and supportive space where everybody can share dances and explore, taking care of themselves and others. Alexandre Mendes Alexandre is a Brazilian dance artist and pedagogue based currently in Finland. He graduated in dance from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and has been working since 2007 as a dancer, actor and also coaching dancers and actors in the physical training as well as their artistic/creative expression. Since 2013, he has been offering trainings, courses and workshops in contemporary dance, contact improvisation, dance theater and the dramaturgy of the body, making the elements of contact improvisation the basis of his work. Somatic practices, studies and research in Laban/Bartenieff, Feldenkrais, Eutonia, as well as interest for movements and qualities such as flying low, rolling and flow, are his pedagogical basis for teaching dance to professionals and enthusiasts of this art in Brazil, Finland, France and Italy. Alexandre, who also works as a movement educator, massage therapist and manual therapist, applies these skills also in classes to promote the student's well-being and physical and mental health. Lately, Alexandre has worked as a freelance teacher in improvisation, contemporary dance and contact workshops (Italy and Finland), coaching Embodiment and Body Communication for Therapists and Enterprises (France) and offering individual somatic regulation consultations in manual therapy in Finland and abroad. Catrin Kaitaro Catrin is a dance artist currently based in Helsinki who works as a freelancer moving between performing arts, pedagogy and filmmaking. In addition to professional studies in Outokumpu dance education, she has studied contemporary dance in France (Centre Choregraphique James Carles) and Senegal (Ecole des Sables). She has also completed studies in dance pedagogy and at the moment she is learning about dance and movement therapy. She works as a dancer and facilitator in contemporary dance, improvisation and contact work in various contexts, from amateurs to professionals. At the moment, she also works with the elderly people in care homes in her community dance project and leads hiking retreats in nature. Thanks to her Axis Syllabus studies, training as a sports massage therapist and years of studying pilates, it is also important for her to guide the movement by understanding the anatomical and biomechanical starting points, so that we can all move sustainably and efficiently, avoiding unnecessary injuries. At the moment she is mainly practicing contact improvisation and play-fight/liquid body (Bruno Caverna) practices and has also been strongly influenced by martial arts and other eastern practices such as chi kung and yoga. Encounters and sharing with people working in different fields and from different backgrounds are a big inspiration to her. Se on tanssitaiteilijoiden Alexandre Mendesin ja Catrin Kaitaron yhteistyöprosessi, joka keskittyy tanssi-improvisaatioon ja yhteisluomiseen. Catrin ja Alexandre tuovat työskentelyssään yhteen kokemuksiaan vuosien ajalta eri puolilta maailmaa. Työpajan sisältö kumpuaa heidän yhteisestä työskentelystään kontakti-improvisaation parissa, mutta he tuovat mukanaan vaikutteita myös taustoistaan nykytanssin, kamppailulajien ja muiden somaattisten praktiikoiden parissa. Spiraalit ovat tällä kertaa lähtökohtamme liikkeeseen. Herkistymme niiden kautta jokaisessa hetkessä avautuville äärettömille mahdollisuuksille ja reiteille sekä yhteisen kuuntelun ja tanssin syntymiselle. Yksin, pareittain ja ryhmissä harjoittelemme liikkumista yhteydessä toisiimme tilan läpi ja kontaktissa sekä havainnoimme sitä, miten liike kulkee tilassa ja virtaa kehosta toiseen. Tutustumme myös esineiden/välineiden kanssa työskentelyyn (pallot tai vyöt). Tunnustelemme niiden avulla kehomme kierteistä anatomiaa ja sitä, millaisiin reitteihin ja laatuihin välineen muodon ja liikkeen seuraaminen voi meidät johdatella. Alexandre Mendes Alexandre on Brasiliaislähtöinen tanssitaiteilija ja -pedagogi, joka asuu ja työskentelee tällä hetkellä Suomessa. Hän on valmistunut tanssijaksi Rio de Janeiron yliopistosta Braziliassa ja työskennellyt vuodesta 2007 tanssijana, näyttelijänä ja valmentaen tanssijoita ja näyttelijöitä sekä fyysisessä harjoittelussa että taiteellisessa ilmaisussa. Vuodesta 2013 lähtien hän on ohjannut nykytanssin, kontakti-improvisaation, teatterin sekä kehollisen dramaturgian työpajoja ja kursseja työskentelynsä perustana kontakti-improvisaatio. Somaattiset praktiikat, opinnot Laban/Bartenieff:n, Feldenkraisin ja Eutonian parissa sekä loputon kiinnostus liikettä kohtaan, kuten lattiatekniikka, rullaaminen ja virtaus, ovat hänen pedagoginen perustansa opettaa tanssia tämän taiteen ammattilaisille ja harrastajille Brasiliassa, Suomessa, Ranskassa ja Italiassa. Alexandre, joka työskentelee myös hierojana ja manuaaliterapeuttina, soveltaa tätäkin asiantuntemustaan tunneilla edistääkseen oppilaiden hyvinvointia sekä fyysistä ja henkistä terveyttä. Viime aikoina Alexandre on työskennellyt freelance-opettajana improvisaation ja nykytanssin työpajoissa (Italia ja Suomi), Embodiment and Body Communication for Therapists and Entreprises -ohjaajana (Ranska) sekä manuaaliterapeuttina tarjoten yksilökonsultaatiota ympäri Suomen ja ulkomailla. Catrin Kaitaro Catrin liikkuu freelancerina esittävän taiteen, pedagogiikan ja lyhytelokuvan välimaastoissa. Hän on opiskellut nykytanssia Outokummun tanssin koulutuksen lisäksi Ranskassa (Centre Chorégraphique James Carles) ja Senegalissa (Ecole des Sables) sekä käynyt lisäksi tanssipedagogiikan ja tanssi-liiketerapian opintoja. Hän työskentelee tanssijana ja ohjaajana nykytanssin, improvisaation ja kontaktityöskentelyn parissa erilaisissa yhteyksissä, harrastelijoista ammattilaisiin. Tällä hetkellä hän toimii myös mm. ikäihmisten kanssa palvelutaloissa yhteisötanssiprojektissaan ja ohjaa vaellusretriittejä tunturissa. Axis Syllabus-opintojen, urheiluhierojan koulutuksen ja pitkien pilatesopintojen ansiosta hänelle on tärkeää ohjata liikettä ymmärtäen anatomiset ja biomekaaniset lähtökohdat, niin että voimme liikkua kestävästi ja tehokkaasti välttäen turhia loukkaantumisia. Viimeiset vuodet hän on viettänyt pääosin kontakti-improvisaation ja play-fight/liquid body (Bruno Caverna) -praktiikoiden parissa ja saanut vaikutteita myös fighting monkey- harjoittelusta, taistelulajeista ja muista itämaisista praktiikoista kuten chi kungista ja joogasta. Kohtaamiset ja jakaminen eri aloilla toimivien ja eri taustoista tulevien ihmisten kanssa inspiroivat häntä. Catrinille tanssi onkin parhaimmillaan kohtaamisia ja yhdessä oppimista!
