A true community focused event celebrating underground techno and house music alongside the renowned ‘La Fête de Marquette’ festival right in the heart of Madison, WI. Join us for two days in McPike Park for a free family friendly event that includes some of the world’s best house and techno, immersive decor, curated vendors, live art, food & drink, beautiful summer vibes, and oh so much more! We also have official after-parties both Friday and Saturday night starting immediately after the festival ends, just a couple short blocks away at the High Noon Saloon. Born in Berkshire, he’s a major player with a sound and (punk) attitude that’s impossible to miss and yet despite all of that success, he’s always kept his artistic feet on the ground. That’s extremely evident as we chat over Zoom for this new interview as 2022 comes into view. “I think I’ve got more fire now than it had in the beginning. And I like that. I remember talking to Derrick May back in the 90s at a café in Belgium and all we talked about was the hunger. And the hunger was born out of the life you’ve lived, how you grew up and what you went through. And the situation for me growing up, although I didn’t have a bad upbringing, it was flippin’ hard, man. The world was not how I wanted it to be and I didn’t fit in. People romanticize the 90s but the path was not easy. I don’t want to be bogged down by the rules. Society. And unfortunately, that’s something that’s even stronger in me now.” A bona fide pioneer of sound design and performance with a singular musical vision, Slater first minted the P.A.S. alias back in 1993. Since then, Planetary Assault Systems has become a byword for hypnotic, soulful and funk-heavy techno that blurs the lines between pure psychedelic and peak-time, main room techno for audiences large and small. Whatever the environment, Luke Slater’s work as Planetary Assault Systems captures the very best elements of techno for audiences across the globe. Crucially, this is music with a huge vision and scope, meaning Luke has fans across the world, from London and Berlin to Detroit via Dekmantel and back. It’s no accident that his latest album comes to a close with the classic sonics of ‘Nano Chameleon’: this futuristic, forceful slice of funk is powered by white noise percussion and never lets go for a minute. It’s the same spiritual ethos that has powered Luke’s own mind-set since the early days and it’s no accident that he’s been called “one of techno’s most chameleonic enigmas” in the past. And when you’ve released on labels from NovaMute and Ostgut Ton to Peacefrog and his own Mote-Evolver imprint, you’d be a fool to argue against the karmic chameleon. ___ Derrick Carter: Widely acknowledged as one of the best DJs in the world. With innovative productions, flawless technical skills and an effortlessly joyful attitude of rocking a crowd, his influence has infiltrated throughout the spectrum of dance music. By refusing to accept conventional standards and instead choosing to simply do his own thing he has built a worldwide reputation as one of the underground pioneers, becoming a major celebrity among dance-music aficionados. Derrick’s sets are rooted in house, but he freely travels outside conformative club tastes, seamlessly incorporating old-school disco, soul, jazz, and whatever else catches his fancy to jack the beat and rock the party. “So many people come up to me and say, ‘Man, I had the worst day. My girlfriend left me, I locked my keys in my car, but you turned me for two hours, and that made me able to get up in the morning.’ That’s the best thing going.” - Derrick Carter ___ Rene Wise’s approach to writing music and DJing fuses together as one concept; tapping into primal human instinct via rhythm and groove. Wise portrays a deep sense of knowledge and maturity in his sound, devising atmospheric soundscapes with a raw but modern touch, captivating the listener from beginning to end. His sets demonstrate this to full effect, consistently maintaining a powerful sonic trademark whilst possessing the innate ability to create hip-shaking poly-rhythms and multi-deck layers. Before discovering the world of electronic music, Wise came from a background of drum and percussion which was guided by his Iranian father who was a professional drummer. This influence plays a huge part in shaping the foundation of techno that he crafts. Wise’s 'quality over quantity’ mindset has seen him become a mainstay on influential labels such as Mote Evolver and Beard Man which has led him to work with some of the most respected names in the industry. His pure but passionate approach to music has given him the honour of gracing institutions such as Berghain and Fabric and earned him a residency at the esteemed underground Eerste Communie parties hailing from The Netherlands. ____ Waajeed is a musical artist from Detroit, constantly shape-shifting to inspire the spirit of his people. A founding member of Slum Village and Platinum Pied Pipers, his over twenty year career has found him collaborating with musicians from all over the spectrum of sound. Comfortable with both hip-hop crews and avant garde installations, his main missive is authenticy, embodied by his label Dirt Tech Reck. Currently, he is working to build out the Underground Music Academy to foster multi-generational skill-sharing for Detroit musicians. ____ Ayesha is a Brooklyn-based artist whose tactile club productions trace an arc across techno, bass, and diasporic influences with devastating results. Ayesha's musical approach embodies her knack for trippy psychedelic sound design, channeling percussive techno rhythms and UK soundsystem pressure in equal measure. The result is heady body music tailored to the dance floor. Similarly, Ayesha’s DJ sets are a menage of styles, reflecting her playful curiosity as a producer and insights from a decade of working in nightlife. Expect big dancefloor moments, with Ayesha digging deep across techno, breaks, trance and all the areas between. Her debut album 'Rhythm Is Memory' is Ayesha's latest effort for NYC staple Kindergarten Records, joining releases on respected outposts Scuffed, Fever AM, and Controlfreak Recordings to name just a few. ___ JADALAREIGN grew up as Jada Lorraine an hour north of New York City, where she was first introduced to the vibrant world of music in a household resounding with jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, and world music. From an early age, Jada had always been surrounded by sound. Before she discovered her love for mixing records, she played the acoustic bass and piano in her adolescence, and years later, her first stint in the music industry came, a behind-the-scenes role as a music director at an entertainment blog. In the mid-'10s, Jada's career kicked into gear. She honed her DJing craft, interned for the pivotal former women and non-binary-focused collective, Discwoman, and began putting on her own parties in an emergent Brooklyn nightlife scene that was still figuring out its identity. The sound she cultivated in those pivotal years interweaved sumptuous house, soul, and jazz—classic records that harken back to her roots—with newer beats that embody the future of Black contemporary dance music like East Coast club and techno. As a selector and an events programmer, Jada's involvement in New York's scene is part of a broader mission to tell the stories of the origins of dance music, a genre that emerged from Black, Latinx, and queer communities across the Midwest, Northeast, and UK. She also maintains a FUBU (For us, by us) approach to her work. At the height of the pandemic, she collaborated with FIVEBOI and Sam Law to launch an online music production workshop series catered toward marginalized artists, In Sessions. This unbearable noise beyond the pale of articulation is giving life after Babel: a rhythmic and tonal program for the reanimation of dead materials, rendering immanent a syntonic grammar of the spirit. Nodes open on the one end to a brutality: the monolithic grind of silicon on carbon, a glacial scream, wake of expropriated blood and dirt jamming up the optics. On the other end, a coy ecstasy: self-taught Prometheus two-stepping in the church of house, speaking languages he himself doesn’t understand, sliding through transatlantic fibers to pull up on the steel husks of server farms and hex the surveillance chains his damn self. Between these twin valences lies the cultivation of a deep mnemonic nod, ever-flickering between the speculative future of progress and the drone of decay.
