Explorations in Contact Improvisation
Two workshops with Alex Jordan, Daniel Mang and co-teachers
Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia
12 / 13 May and 19 / 20 May 2018
12 / 13 May: Contact Improvisation Fundamentals
Throughout this weekend we will be working with the fundamentals of contact improvisation, such as: the relation to gravity, the physical contact between movers and the momentum of moving bodies; modulating tone, sharing weight, and waking up our reflexes and sense of balance. All levels of experience and all kinds of bodies are welcome.
19 / 20 May: Bonding and Bounding
In this workshop we will focus on the role of touch and movement as relational practices: bonding and bounding, consent and collaboration, safer spaces and negotiation will be some of our themes. This workshop has two parts:
19 May: Family Focus Day
Children are welcome to both weekends, in fact, the inclusion of children and parents will be one of our main themes all along! There will be childcare, a children's programme and a children's play space on both weekends. But this Saturday will be especially dedicated to exploring ways for adults and children to move and play together.
20 May: Contact Improvisation and Body Politics
In this final segment we will use different modes of movement and touch, including contact improvisation, as ways of exploring body politics. One of our main questions will be: how can physical culture, touch and movement, be useful in sustaining community, understanding and recovering from trauma?
These workshops will appeal to dancers, practitioners and helpers of different modes and professions, and all people interested in sensitively navigating cultural boundaries.
The teachers:
Alex Jordan
I am a dance movement therapist and improviser with over twenty years experience in assisting people of diverse ages and cultural backgrounds to find new adventures in moving. I have studied and practiced in many fields of movement, including dance movement therapy, body mind centering, yoga, authentic movement, choreography, and physical storytelling. I am also trained in Narrative Therapy and counselling. My current focus of work and research is into understanding and assisting in recovery from trauma through the body, as well as working and connecting cross-culturally through movement. I am passionate about using movement as a portal to understanding, embodiment and transformation for all people, no matter how much you ‘think you can dance’. I am based in Northern Australia.
Daniel Mang
Contact improvisation has been my primary movement practice since 1986. I have been teaching the form since 1990. I also practice aikido and am strongly influenced by the Feldenkrais method, Body Mind Centering and ideokinesis. My teaching is informed by my background as a professional bodyworker / physiotherapist, my studies in osteopathy, my experience with different approaches to communication, and by my politics. I see my interest in radical social theory and my love of contact improvisation as two aspects of the same desire. I am based in Sweden.
