If you want to dance like a pro and get your skills leveled up it's almost inevitable you need to learn from the roots. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS Gilson Damasco, a legend of LambaZouk, and his amazing partner Maïlys will be teaching a special group training in Brazilian Zouk Lambada on October 3rd, the Monday following NYCZF. The training will be 2-3 hours at a studio in Midtown Manhattan-- stay tuned here for updates on exact location and tickets. ❤ Gilson helped spread LambaZouk throughout Argentina and beyond and hosts the Brazilian Dance Festival in Amsterdam. I’ve had the chance to host him in Atlanta—he’s a firehose of Lambada history and super applicable technique teaching LambaZouk on both "Rio" and "Lambada" timings. ABOUT GILSON: Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Gilson started dancing Lambada 27 years ago when the dance was very popular. Since the moment he fell in love with this dance, he spent years of love and dedication on LambaZouk – style (which has its origin in Lambada-style). In 1991 he brought LambaZouk to Argentina, and transformed it into one of the most attractive dances, desired by Argentineans. There, he participated in TV – shows and performed as a dancer with famous artists. In 1992 he started, with his formal dance partner Fabiola Prestes, a successful brazilian nightclub called “Porto Seguro”, where they started to teach various Brazilian dance styles such as LambaZouk, Forro, Samba de Gafieira, and Axe. They also performed at different events. In 1997, he began to organize Brazilian LambaZouk parties in the most famous club in Buenos Aires, “Maluco Beleza”, which continued for eight years. In 2004 he was invited to Europe for the first LambaZouk Dance Congress in Barcelona organised by Daniel and Leticia. There he met a lot of dance teachers from Europe, including Claudia de Vries. In 2006 Claudia invited him for her second BrasaZouk Congress. This was his first time in Holland. From that moment Gilson started his project to travel around the world to expand LambaZouk. As part of his project to expand LambaZouk to Europe, Gilson teaches weekly in the Netherlands and organizes the annual Brazilian Dance Festival (BDF-Amsterdam). Gilson is well known for by his clear explanation of techniques and of the best way to lead a partner. He is surely one of the best LambaZouk teachers in the world! ABOUT MAÏLYS: Maïlys is an artist being deeply passionate by dance, singing and music. From her childhood onwards she has been dedicated to dance (starting with Rhythmic Gymnastics) and classical music (Piano-Flute). She decided to go further as a professional dancer and singer after high-school graduation. In 2013 she graduated from the Musical Theater School : Choreia Art Studio, Paris. She kept strengthening her skills by following an intensive Acting class, an Opera singing conservatory and a Dance school (jazz- ballet) in Paris. In 2014 she discovered Brazilian Zouk and Samba de Gafieira in Paris, and instantly felt in love with Brazilian dances. The spirit, the community, the technique, the aesthetics, the connection, the field of freedom and creativity that those dances embody, was all she was looking for in Dance. Allowing to share and create with a partner, but also to give a pattern to improve the body expression. Very honored to study 4 years from Alex de Carvalho in Paris, Master of Brazilian Zouk, she was part of DBAC, Alex de Carvalho’s French team. In 2018 Maïlys moved to New York City for an 8 months intensive Dance program at Broadway Dance Center, concentration in Jazz, but also learning ballet and contemporary. Beside school, she connected, learned and danced with Ry’el and Jessica, being part of their team and performing by their side in Atlantic City. From 2018 until now she learned from Gilson, Master and big reference in this dance world. This way she could connect with the history of this Dance, the rhythm. The roots, the Joy. From Opera Singing, to Lambada, Musical theater to classical music—her everyday life is a mix of different arts! She has being traveling, discovering dance in many places— Brazil, USA, Holland, Spain, Czech Republic, Mexico, Croatia, and more— enriching her soul and her dance learning from teacher and and getting inspired by dancers form all over the world.
