Balboa tends to focus more on partner connection and small, subtle movements rather than big flashy one. As a result, viewed to be one of the most graceful forms of swing dance. While viewing Balboa choreography and socials is popular, it is better to be experienced and felt. It is widely considered a “dancer’s dance.” Scott discovered Balboa while dancing Lindy Hop and Blues in Philadelphia. His dance inspiration came from watching the now world renowned Balboa instructors Adam Speen and Nelle Cherry dance. He thinks Balboa is a perfect combination between Blues and Lindy Hop dancing. When dancing Balboa, Scott emphasizes comfort, musicality, and most importantly flow of the dance. Unlike Scott, Miyabi’s admiration for Balboa wasn’t love at first sight. It was not until she began learning Balboa in Korea that she became more interested in the dance. The more she learned about Balboa partnership and technique, the more she began to love the dance. Now Miyabi can not go a social dance without dancing Balboa! In her opinion, the most important aspect of Balboa is focusing on and mastering the fundamental skills of the dance. Scott and Miyabi have been dancing Balboa together the summer of 2016. Being from different parts of the world, Scott and Miyabi offer two unique complementing perspectives on the intricacies of the dance. In order to spread the love of Balboa throughout Taipei, they began teaching together at the beginning of 2017 as well as hosting a weekly Balboa social dance. Their hope is create more baby Balboa Monsters to share the love of the dance. ♥
