The workshop will include a late night hour long social dance, silent auction of Jazz music, history, and dance items, a drawing for a $150+ pass to a Dance History Workshop Festival Weekend called Lindy Diversion as well as four informative and interactive presentations from our guest speakers: (1)"Pre-Jazz" &Ragtime, (2)Old School Swing, (3) Modern Swing, (4) Ballroom Swing & Contemporary Jazz. Great African American and Female Dancers will be highlighted in the event as well as the major movements of the dance in modern times. Swing Dance and Jazz are uniquely American as dance styles that were born in America by Americans. Swing died out as a cultural phenomenon and was virtually non-existent post world war II until revived in the 1990’s. Today dancers like ourselves push to preserve the culture, expose and engage people in a precious and creative multi-cultural aspect of our history and innovation as Americans as well as enjoy the dance as a living evolving thing. UCCS Students will be able to experience a unique arts history workshop through us. Special guests Stephanie Rae and Anthony Carusiello will be presenting their Jazz Dance Roots Workshop through historical clips, reenactment, demonstrations, interactive dance lessons, handouts, and resources. Anthony Carusiello is a Boulder based professional dance instructor from Champagne Illinois who teaches regularly at Boulder Swing, competes and performs nationally, and was recently accepted to a prestigious teaching program in Sweden. He is a master navigator of the modern Jazz dance culture and community. Stephanie Rae has been dancing for over 10 years and started focusing on Jazz Dance History about five years ago. She prides herself in incorporating Jazz History in her lessons and focusing on the communication and cooperation aspects of dance culture. She views teaching swing dance as a historical preservation project as well as a “living and evolving” dance. Both Stephanie and Anthony incorporate gender non-specific words in their lessons and promote an inclusive and safe space environment at their venues, lessons, and in their work. “Followers” and “Leaders” are not gender specific in our classes and both teachers are “ambi-dancetrous” meaning they dance both roles and play with interchanging during the dance, exemplifying their focus on the connection and conversational feel of dancing.
