Hello Community, In light of the current Covid-19 situation Richard and I have decided it is best to postpone the Contact Improv workshop that was scheduled for this Sat, March 21. Let’s unite, support and inspire each other! with infectious Love, Trinity The Dancing Path™ is excited to present- Contact Improv for Beginners with Richard Kim Sat, March 21 7:10pm - 9:45pm 219 W 19th Street, 3rd Floor (bet 7th & 8th Ave) This is a monthly workshop - each class will be different and you will learn new skills. This class will introduce you to basic principles of contact improvisation, with special emphasis on consent and weight-sharing. Contact Improv involves dancers sharing contact through out their dance and using each others bodies to inform, explore and discover unique creative ways to move together. It’s fun, playful, connecting and nurturing. It is about listening, being open and going with the flow :-) Trinity Contact improvisation is a social dance that derives from modern dance, post-modern dance, and aikido. By sharing weight through a rolling point of contact, dance partners find themselves in unexpected physical configurations -- sometimes rolling, sometimes standing and sometimes spinning in the air. It's a non-gendered, totally improvised dance, typically done without music! There are no steps and no specific movements, and while there are basic principles to contact improvisation, there are few if any "rules" about how to do it. It's typically practiced in "jams," social gatherings that happen all over the world! Practitioners learn to wait, to listen, to release control, to focus, to be aware of physical surroundings, to react quickly, to balance, to catch themselves when falling, to breathe, to laugh, to move with ease and efficiency, to be present and in the moment, to be aware of their wants and needs, and to wait some more. Richard’s intention is to teach a genuine intro class for folks who might have little or no previous experience in dance, and that you come out of with some basic skills and a sense of the form. (People with experience dancing are also welcome!) Here's what Richard plans to teach (somewhat subject to change): * consent -- saying yes and no, checking in, looking/listening for No nonverbally * rolling together on the ground (including "surfing") * weight-sharing principles and being off-balance - how to lean in * the rolling point of contact and "Ouija" dancing * open dancing -- practice "jamming" No partner is necessary. We will be switching partners throughout the evening. He has taught classes in New York City (Lehman College, 100 Grand Dance, Randy Warshaw Studio and Ecstatic Dance), Toronto (Ontario Regional Contact Jam), Southern California, Western Massachusetts (Earthdance), Buffalo, and Michigan, and was the principal teacher for the first Buffalo Weekend Jam. He currently lives and dances in New York City. As a teacher, I like to focus on technique and practical exercises, with an emphasis on weight-sharing and the rolling point of contact.
