ProAm Competition at The 9:20 Special

SCHEDULE: 10:00pm - Competitors meeting backstage - all dancers (Pros and Ams) must be present and on time! 10:15pm - Competition! :-) Our 7th annual ProAm Competition is here! RSVP if you plan to compete *or* be there to cheer on the competitors. Both groups are extremely important to meet the goal of this event: provide a welcoming, low-pressure, supportive environment for those who are new to competing. Since this competition has become quite popular, we found the need to clarify some frequently asked questions. Please read these carefully and let us know if you have questions. <3 1) Definition of an Amateur (Am) A dancer who has not competed in more than one competition (or competed in any advanced comps and in either role*!). Last year, we did have to tell people minutes before the ProAm that they weren't an eligible Am. So if you're unsure, just ask us! We're happy to help you figure it out. <3 *to clarify RE roles...if you do not fit the "Am" criteria in your primary role then you're not able to compete in your non-primary role either. This is because the main goal of this comp is to be welcoming and comfortable for *new* competitors. 2) Definition of a Professional (Pro) A dancer who teaches and/or competes regularly. Only the Amateur gets judged during the competition so we're not as strict about the Pro definition; however, the point of this competition is for an experienced/advanced-level dancer (ideally one who gets paid to teach) to help and guide the Am during this experience. Use your best judgement. 3) No aerials 4) Each Pro and Am can only compete with one partner WHAT IS A PROAM COMPETITION? An Amateur dancer pairs up with a Professional dancer. The competition is considered a Strictly Lindy competition which means you determine your partner ahead of time and dance Lindy Hop with that same partner the entire competition (rather than changing partners like in a Mix & Match contest). The competition is based on your social dancing skills and you will be able to show this off by dancing to snip-its of a number of different songs at a range of tempos with your partner. Amateurs can ask a Pro to join with them or vice versa. You will register for the contest at the door the night of. The Amateur will pay a $5.00 entry. 1st place: CASH!
