It was certainly a great start to the new year at our first event of 2025! Great numbers, good ratio of leaders to followers (with slightly more leaders), people we haven’t seen for a very long time (including our first siting in 8 years of a fantastic leader from our past days in Camberwell!) and an exceptional playlist courtesy of DJ Yury. Thanks to those who turned up in the beach party dress theme, the weather was very appropriate for it and it was great to some colourful get ups to make the night even more brighter :-). I received a couple of emails regarding the source of the vintage beach tango photo I used for the last notice. The photographer is unknown, but it was taken from an article featuring such photos of tango dancers in Brighton Beach, New York including comments of the day back in the 1910’s when tango was seen as what we would call today, a dirty dance, and doctor's advised against it ;-), https://www.brownstoner.com/history/brooklyn-photos-coney-island-brighton-beach-tango/. Alison, a tango dancer on our list has also shared an excellent article she has written for the National Museum of Australia, centered around an old pair of tango slippers from Goulburn from the same era and similarly detailing how the dance was scorned by many influential people including royalty! It also gives us an insight into tango in Melbourne back in those old days when it was a new dance, nma.gov.au/exhibitions/glorious-days/sport-and-leisure/tango. Lastly, as we are sharing links on articles, this is not tango related, but regarding the solo equivalent of tango in terms of technique, precision and taking a life time to try and master - ballet. It actually relates to Alison's tango slipper article as it’s an online exhibition of historic pointe shoes from the Australian Performing Arts Collection, starting in the same decade as the previous 2 articles, https://stories.artscentremelbourne.com.au/retracing-our-steps/index.html. Speaking of shoes, the very well made male Italian tango shoes which were left at our Christmas event in December last year are still waiting for their owner to claim them.
