Hooray for an even gender balance at our last event! Whilst numbers were less than what we would like, the most important thing was that there was an even leader to follower ratio, so everyone could dance at the same time if they wanted (and they did) ;-), and have enough good dances with different people to enjoy the night. We now have a steady crew of committed leaders who have implied that they will be regularly attending. This is all we needed to ensure the continuation of the event during the dry spell of winter, with quite a few or our regulars away. Speaking of which, don't miss this Sunday as it is the last time we will get to see and dance with Jeff for many months before he flies north. Of course, we still want more leaders and dancers, so please come to this and future events and join the fun. Whenever I randomly meet an Argentinian I always ask them if they dance tango. I have always been answered with a 'no', which might be accompanied with something like 'my grandfather used to listen to the music'. The majority of Argentinians don't dance tango, instead the one thing that is common to most is a passionate love of football, or soccer as we know it. Whilst the world is caught up with World Cup fever, it brought back memories of attending the Mediterranean Summer Tango Festival in Croatia back in 2014. The opening party, on the night before the first day of the festival, coincided with the semi-final of the World Cup. Argentina were playing, which effectively meant that there was no dancing in the bar, instead the festival attendees were glued to the TV, much to the annoyance of 3 of us attendees who were more interested in tango than the match. This was what I wrote about it in the Project NFT notice back in 2014 "We got drenched on our walk to the beachside bar, but as we were to discover we were better off staying home as the World Cup semi finals featuring Argentina took precedent on the TV screen and there was no dancing. At half time we hoped for some tango action then on, but there was only Latin party music for the 15 minute break, so we danced to that and then headed back home once everyone resumed their TV viewing spots for the rest of the match." Then the final night of the festival 4 days later, coincided with the final of the World Cup which saw Argentina lose. As a tribute to their country Chicho Frumboli and Juana Sepulveda danced around an Argentinian football top to their national anthem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nB4RKwRc5Dk, and this is what I also wrote about that at the time "Chicho and Juana apparently weren't planning on performing at the festival, but according to the announcement decided they would treat us, as Argentina had played that day in the World Cup finals, and even though they lost they said they were still proud of them and danced a very moving improvised performance to the Argentinian national anthem, which was preceded by Chicho laying down an Argentinian football top on the floor. Just goes to show that you can dance tango to any song that stirs you." Our DJ this Sunday is DJ Campbell.
