About this Event
On September 17th, NYC's #1 Global Bass party Que Bajo is back at the House of Yes for one last summer banger - Picó de Gallo, the QB champeta special.
Champeta is native to the Caribbean coast of Colombia but was born among DJs playing African and African-diaspora records at street parties on massive sound systems called Picó. Descended from soukous and high life and reggae and calypso and cumbia and salsa, it is truly the original global bass movement and has always been a huge inspiration to us at QB.
Palenque Records’ founder and producer Lucas Silva, aka DJ Champeta Man, has pioneered record production and cultural promotion for the Afro-Colombian community since 1996 with his label Palenque Records. Silva is passionate about finding music that’s forgotten by the record industry or that has never been studio recorded, and reaching out to the communities where those music traditions still thrive. With releases from Sexteto Tabala, Alegres Ambulancias, Son Palenque, Batata, Louis Towers among many others, Silva is an expert and activist of champeta music and his own record collection is incredibly deep so we’re especially excited to hear what he brings out for Picó de Gallo.
Que Bajo residents Uproot Andy, Geko Jones and Riobamba will be bringing the heat as always. Uproot Andy is fresh from winning the 2nd annual Batalla Picotera in Colombia and sure to have some special champeta remixes lying around.
Lucha Libre from Puerto Rico will be joining Talacha in holding down the front room.
