Rare Disease Awareness Salsa Bachata Zouk Social!

February is Rare Disease Awareness Month, and this is a way more fun way to dance, get active, raise donations, and share information - than running a 5k 😆 * Dress up theme is zebra and/or unicorn. Dress up if you like, your choice. -Black/white/iridescent/rainbow works! Doctors & nurses are often taught "when you hear hooves, think horses, not zebras". We're coming together and raising hell for the zebras and medical unicorns this night! ~More than 30M Americans (1 in 10) live with one or more rare diseases. ~But 93-95% of over 7,000 known types have no FDA-approved therapies. ~US National Economic Burden of just 379 rare diseases was almost $1 Trillion in 2019. ****A huge portion of diagnostic and treatment care is not covered by health insurance**** ~On average, it takes 6.3 years after symptoms present to get a confirmed diagnosis...often after many wrong ones. ~50% of rare disease patients are CHILDREN!!! ~30% of these kids will not make it to their 5th birthday. >Many adults with these conditions seem to function totally normally, but have a whole 'other' life tending to these health and financial needs. Often doing their own research and experimentation over many years without diagnosis. *Be Kind* >Maybe they have minor slips in cognitive/nervous/mood/speech/mobility/etc functions, that you unknowingly experience. *Be patient* >You may come to know a family that just had a child diagnosed, battling uncertainty and dread. *Be supportive.
