About this Event
Respect Dance Day is about creating a safer, more compassionate dance community in the DMV. By coming together for a day of dance classes and a night of social dancing, we will take a stand against sexual assault!
Thanks to the generosity of members of the dance community, who have donated their expertise, time and resources, 100 percent of ticket sales from Respect Dance Day will go to the DCRCC - Powering A Culture of Consent and UMD Counseling Center.

***Workshops***
1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
Location:
Dance Loft on 14th | 4618 14th St. Northwest | Washington, D.C. 20011
There will be four exciting workshops that will help dancers, from beginners to advanced, improve their fundamentals, work on connection and feel empowered to express themselves on the dance floor.
•Nissim Albaig of SalsaNow will be teaching a salsa partner work class.
•Kat Arias of Ferocity Dance Company, who will be teaching Sensual Bachata Partnerwork.
•Kim Torrence will be teaching an Afro-Latin body movement class. Blending mindfulness and somatic awareness, this class will focus on body movement fundamentals while attuning students to the wisdom and joy of the body.
•Gui Prada and Ashley Kent of District Zouk will be teaching a class on connection. Gui's workshop, "The Universe Behind the Hug," focuses on the three main layers of connection: physical, emotional and spiritual, with the goal of creating an indescribable feeling of comfort and safety in a dance. Ashley and Gui will be highlighting a few of these concepts at Respect Dance Day.
***Special guest speakers***
4:00–5:30 p.m.
•Discussion led by Drs. Rashanta Bledman and Chandni Shah of UMD Counseling Center
Ever wonder about consent, touch, and dance? If yes, come join us for a discussion on this topic! If you have never thought about these ideas, this will still be an informative and thought-provoking conversation to attend! Drs. Rashanta Bledman and Chandni Shah will facilitate a discussion about sexual assault in the dance world. By attending this dialogue, you will learn: a) the definition of sexual assault, b) the definition of consent, c) ways to navigate consent on/off the dance floor, d) strategies to reduce risk, and e) resources for perpetrators and survivors. We also hope to discuss ways that gender, power dynamics and emotional vulnerability play a role in your dance circles. Our goal is to promote and maintain a healthy and safe environment so everyone can have the most fun within the dance world!
•Indira Henard, executive director of the DC Rape Crisis Center (DCRCC - Powering A Culture of Consent | http://dcrcc.org/about-us/who-we-are/staff/)
