He began his journey 15 years ago with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and quickly fell in love with tango, studying at one of the best schools in Rio de Janeiro. However, it was Brazilian Zouk that truly captured Gabriel's heart, and he had the opportunity to learn from Renata Pecanha, one of the founders of this beautiful art form, at her school in Rio. For the past 5 years, Gabriel has been professionally teaching and sharing his love of dance with others. He currently resides and teaches in Iowa City, but travels throughout the Midwest to teach weekly classes in Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Des Moines. In addition to teaching in these areas, Gabriel has also started teaching nationally, sharing his passion and knowledge of Brazilian Zouk from DC to Chicago to San Francisco, and everywhere in between. Aside from his love of dance, Gabriel is deeply committed to sharing his culture and heritage with his students. He is passionate about sharing the beauty and depth of Brazilian Zouk with others, and loves being able to bring a piece of his culture to his classes. She immediately loved it, so much so that the first thing she'd ask her mom upon waking up for the next couple weeks was, "Am I going to dance class today?" She danced tap and ballet for 9 years with Gotta Dance Company, which she performed and competed with as part of a team, and when she was 17 she was introduced to lindy hop and later picked up Balboa. In 2011 she danced salsa for the first time, and latin dancing eventually captured her heart. in September 2019 at Fuze, her first ever latin festival, she was introduced to Zouk, and a couple months later at Bailame festival she fell in love with the art. She's studied with Bruno Miranda, Gui Prada, Gabriel de Carvalho, Elijah James, Kuna, and Imaan. Verity has always enjoyed competing, and has participated in Strictly and Jack & Jill (J&J) competitions for Swing, Balboa, and Zouk. She's been competing since December 2019, and placed 3rd in the Novice J&J at Canada Zouk Congress 2023 (her fourth BZDC-sanctioned competition)! She loves this dance for the way it has impacted her on a head, heart, soul and spirit level; it's taught her more about herself and how she connects to others than any other dance thus far, and continues to do so. She hopes to introduce this dance to as many people as possible across the midwest and beyond so that others may find the joy that she has found through Brazilian Zouk. She's recently embraced her desire of becoming an Artist and is excited for where this journey takes her. She's incredibly grateful and excited to be making her festival debut at Zouksgiving 2023!
