Salsa in Hawaii Congress Dance Competition

1. GENERAL RULES • Division Categories are for couples only and not teams. Couples are defined as 2 people (not gender specific). • Everyone competing must have a full pass to the Salsa in Hawaii Congress 2020. (Professionals who are teaching at the event automatically receive a complementary full pass.) • Competition Fee: $25 per person per division (If you are competing in multiple categories it is $25 per division. Professionals who are teaching at the event are exempt from this fee.) • Props are not allowed • All competition songs must be no longer than 3 minutes (if an intro is used, it must be no more than 10 seconds in length). • All competition partnerwork choreographies must include at least 75% partner work. All competition footwork choreographies must be 100% footwork. Tricks (feet may leave the floor) are allowed in all divisions. 2. DIVISIONS • Amateur Salsa Footwork (on 1 or on 2) • Amateur Salsa Partnerwork (on 1 or on 2) • Pro/Am Salsa Footwork (on 1 or on 2) • Pro/Am Salsa Partnerwork (on 1 or on 2) • Amateur Bachata Footwork (on 1 or on 2) • Amateur Bachata Partnerwork(on 1 or on 2) • Pro/Am Bachata Footwork (on 1 or on 2) • Pro/Am Bachata Partnerwork (on 1 or on 2) 3. DIVISION DEFINITIONS • Amateur: Defined as a student or person who does not make a living as a Dance Instructor, Performer, Dance Competitor or Dance Adjudicator and who does not receive any financial compensation for these activities. • Professional: Defined as a person who receives some amount of financial compensation as a Dance Instructor, Performer, Dance Competitor or Dance Adjudicator, and who makes part or all of their income from these activities. 4. SCORING CRITERIA • Timing 25%: Recognized Salsa Timing is designated for this competition as 1-2-3, 5-6-7. Competitors can choose to break on 1 or on 2, but must maintain consistency for the duration of the routine. Recognized Bachata Timing is designated for this competition as 1-2-3-4, 5-6-7-8. • Technique 25%: Technique is reflected through balance, placement of the steps, posture, lines, and partnering connection. This refers also to general technique for partner dance, where the movement is “grounded,” and there is clarity of proper weight changes from foot to foot as well as technique and/or body styling that is specific to Salsa or Bachata Dance. Movement should appear to be both clear and effortless. Partners should be clearly dancing together in a lead/follow manner. Any footwork should be synchronized. • Musicality 25%: Couples will demonstrate their ability to creatively work within the timing of their individual music. This can be done in a variety of ways, including patterns, footwork, tricks, etc… • Difficulty 15%: Reflected by difficulty of patterns, turns, intricacy of shine movements, and level of tricks, dips, drops and flares. In order to get credit for any of the above mentioned, the movement must be successfully executed. • Overall Presentation 10%: You Will Be Judged By Your Overall Presentation. This includes costuming, showmanship, and also good sportsmanship.
