And yet we all have vast swathes of our personality and mind that are repressed as a result of societal pressure, guilt, and traumatic experiences. These repressed portions of our mind make up what legendary psychologist and modern day shaman Carl Jung dubbed “The Shadow”. When the material in our Shadow is repressed, it can be the most harmful aspect of our mind, constantly sabotaging our best efforts, and leaving us drained and frustrated. When it is integrated, however, Shadow material offers us some of the most potent lifeforce and brilliant creativity that exists inside of the human mind. If we desire full integration of our consciousness, if we truly aim for self actualization, we must turn our eyes towards the darkness inside of us; the unsavory parts that we have ignored. We must desire to truly know them. To befriend them. To love them.
