About this Event
Join The American Lindy Hop Championships and Savoy Dance Bums for a World Lindy Hop Day event May 23, 2021 from 4-6pm ET. This two-hour class is dedicated to iconic dances of the 1920s & 1930s, the Shim Sham and vintage vernacular jazz dance popularized during the Swing Era.
No partner is needed to take part in the class.
The Shim Sham
In case you don't know in the late 1920s Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant were with the Whitman Sisters troupe on the T.O.B.A. circuit in Chicago when they created a tap dance routine they called "Goofus." In early 1930s, the Shim Sham was performed on stage in Harlem. At the end of many performances, all of the musicians, singers, and dancers would get together on stage and do one last routine: the Shim Sham Shimmy. The Three Little Words would close their show at Connie's Inn with the Shim Sham, and invite everyone to join in, "and the whole club would join us, including the waiters. For a while people were doing the Shim Sham up and down Seventh Avenue all night long," according to Joe Jones, one of the group.
At the Savoy Ballroom, some lindy hoppers did the shim sham as a group line dance, without the taps. In the mid-1980s, Frankie Manning introduced the Shim Sham vceating a special version for swing dancers. Manning's version caught on, and it's now done at swing dances worldwide.
The Savoy Dance Bums Stroll
Choreogtaphed in 2020 by Paulette Brockington the Savoy Dance Bums Stroll provides a way to finish out the Shim Sham if you don't have a partner. Traditionally, in the swing dancer version, ater the jazz sections are finished the dancers couple up to dance. If you didn't have a partner you'd just walk off the floor. This Stroll uses Lindy's basic steps along with other Swing Era steps to give dancers material on place of the partnered section. This gives dancers without a partner an option at future dances to walk off the floor or continue with this choreographed partnerless. solo jazz pattern that swings, is kind of funky and filled with fun.
The class will be taught on Zoom.
