WORKSHOP DETAILS
All sessions are suitable for people who have or have not been to other skills days with us. J P will cater for the different levels within the group by giving you a challenge depending on where you are at. All in all you should walk away from these session with the tools to take you to the next level of your playing.
CAIXA
The caixa is the backbone of the baterias of Rio's samba schools and blocos, providing the rhythm for the rest of the instruments to sit on. There are many different samba rhythms and adaptations of other traditional Brazilian rhythms utilised on the caixa in today's carnival groups. In addition to these, time will also be spent on stick technique, caixa 'em cima' and 'em baixo', different types of accents, buzz strokes, rim shots, group playing and musical arrangements. Plus...how to choose the right caixa, tuning your caixa, what type of heads to use, different rhythms across multiple caixas and more.
TIMBAU
Derived from the atabaque drums of candomblé, the Timbau is a more recent addition to the batteries of Brazil. Made famous by Carlinhos Brown's group Timbalada, it is now widely used throughout Brazil. Utilising its distinctive opens, slaps and rich bass tones, you will learn several grooves usable in different forms of Brazilian music; Samba, Maculelê, Ijexa, Samba Reggae and Barravento. We will also study some playing technique and soloing ideas.
TAMBORIM
The final of the days sessions will be on the most unassuming of Brazil's percussion instruments. Small yet perfectly formed and with as many ways to play it as there are people who play it. Just look down the line of tamborims at any samba school and you will see a variety of ways to hold the instrument and play it. There are lots of different types of tamborim sticks as well as playing techniques. We will cover three of the most popular techniques used to create the famous "carreteiro" or samba swing. They are - 3:1, 2:1 and 1:1. There will also be some time spent on some long phrases and soloing ideas.
