Solo Movement & Partner Challenge Weekend

This July we’re bringing you a weekend of workshops to explore your solo movement and expression and then apply that to Brazilian Zouk partnerwork. This is a mini deep-dive into different aspects of technique and styles of movement drawing on some of the strengths of our team of District Zouk instructors. - Saturday is all solo movement, digging into specific parts of our technique and bringing in different styles - Sunday we’ll start with separate workshops for leads and follows to explore technique and styling - We’ll finish with a partner choreo challenge to apply these techniques to dancing Brazilian zouk Join us for this July weekend to better enjoy your own movement and social dancing! SATURDAY SCHEDULE 1:00-2:00pm: Footwork w/ Elena Find freedom with your feet! This class is intended to help the average zouk dancer articulate, connect/disconnect, and explore with the lower half of your bodies. Working with both abstract and technical concepts, we will learn how to find opportunities for self-expression and stability for both leads and follows. 2:10 - 3:10pm: Urban Dance w/ Lunna This is an urban dance workshop created for Zouk dancers looking to develop movement quality beyond partner work. We’ll use technical exercises and choreography to explore body movement, expand dance vocabulary and strengthen musicality, coordination, and confidence in solo movement. Let’s bounce and play together! 3:20-4:20pm: Arms w/ Elena Styling can feel like stilted choreography… or you can find a flow. We’ll talk about the circles of arm movement and practice with conditioning and drills. Then we will build arm styling shapes and flow on top of our basics! These techniques are applicable for leads and follows. 4:30-5:30pm: Contrast and Textures of Movement w/ Lunna How can the same movement feel completely different? In this workshop, we'll explore contrast and the rich variety of textures that movement can have. Through improvisation, contemporary dance exercises, and guided exploration, we'll investigate dynamics, timing, weight, flow, and expression to discover how subtle changes in movement quality can transform our musical interpretation and physical communication. Designed for Zouk dancers, this class offers creative tools to expand your movement vocabulary, develop greater body awareness, and bring more intention, versatility, and authenticity to both solo movement and partner dancing. SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1:00-2:30pm: Leader & Follower Technique Leaders Footwork w/ Gui As leader, it takes some time to move beyond executing the patterns and start dancing to them. In this workshop, we'll explore footwork possibilities and variations that will add more layers of enjoyment, and a little bit of challenge to your every day movements. We'll play with texture, speed, and positioning to bring a new feeling to our dance. Followers w/ Elena So much of following involves being perfectly balanced and responsive while not rushing. We will dig into the foundations of weight transfer and the link between torsion and timing to help you find your stability. Get ready to know the intricacies of your body movement like never before! 2:45 - 5:00pm: Partner Choreo Challenge w/ Lunna Ready for a challenge? In this workshop, we'll build a dynamic Brazilian Zouk partner choreography that combines a diverse movement vocabulary with rich musical interpretation. We'll explore different textures, rhythms, and expressive qualities, discovering how musicality can shape movement and connection. Whether you're looking to expand your repertoire or challenge yourself creatively, this class will leave you with new ideas, stronger partnering skills, and inspiring choreography to take home.
