We’re back with an online event and it's something special for you… an Afro-Swing class live from Mozambique!
Hodi Maputo Afro Swing have been teaching their energetic fusion of swing and African dance out of Mozambique since 2012. They’ve been running the festival Mozambique Afro Swing Exchange since 2014, as well as teaching around the world (including at the Herrang dance camp).
We’re excited to have Judith Novela and Paulo Inacio teach us a class via Zoom. Also Elias Manhiça and Lisa Josefsson, two co-founders of the project, will give us a short talk on the origin of the Afro Swing movement and how the African roots are present in Jazz and Lindy hop.
Due to Covid-19 the MASX 2020 festival unfortunately had to be cancelled, and the group's other shows and teaching were put on hold. So, there is a GoFundMe to support the project, to ensure the teachers can survive this difficult time and be able to run the festival in future! (It would be wonderful if a group from Bristol could make the trip some day…)
Anyway, we’re running this event to support their fundraiser - 100% of your money goes to Mozambique.
At S.R.C. we play music for blues dancers and other jazz-blues-soul lovers as well as for lindy hoppers. You don’t need to know any swing dance steps to join this class, and you don’t need a partner. It will be high energy so clear some space in your living room! After the class we’ll have deejayed music including plenty of African tunes - Joe Medler will play some Swinging South African Kwela music and West African Blues, and Hazel Crimmins has put together a lovely set of blues tunes that swing… should keep everyone happy!
Later on we'll open a breakout room for chatting too.
Social distancing guidelines have changed, but we still encourage you to take precautions. You can now socialise with one other household, and make physical contact if that counts as your “support bubble”. However, if you’d like to experience this event with friends, we’d suggest taking a phone or tablet to the quiet corner of a park and having a little dance with us in the fresh air.
Don’t feel bad if you’re holed up at home though, we’ll love it if you get on camera and dance… but if you want to sit on the couch with a drink and just enjoy some great tunes that’s ok too :)
See you all soon!
