Special VWCS Weekend Workshops and "Saturday" Social Dance with Guest Pros Paul & Marta Canfield

Valley West Coast Swing is excited to host our first WCS event of 2026 with Paul and Marta Canfield! What better way to kick off some of those winter blues than dancing! See theCanfield's bio below, and mark your calendars, so you can start your year off right! Whether you are a long-time Westie, or have never danced before, we have something for you! ⭐️FRIDAY, January 9th ~ Blacksburg @ Open Space Studios, 1711 North Main Street, Blacksburg • 6-7:30 PM: Intermediate Intensive - Musicality, “Going Off Script.” • 7:30-8 PM: Guided Practice $30 for the evening with pre-registration and payment ($40 at the door) Learn how and when to take your dance “off script” with a better understanding of musicality and connection. This intensive will be for students comfortable with Pushes, Passes, Whips, Starter Step, Throw Out, extending and shortening patterns, and Rock and Go’s. ⭐️SATURDAY, January 10th ~ Roanoke @ Carilion Wellness, 4508 Starkey Road, Roanoke • 2-3 PM: All- Level Workshop, “Pattern with a Purpose.” • 3-4 PM: Newcomer Workshop, “Why we love West Coast Swing.” • 4-5:30 PM: Social Dancing! Pre-register: $25 per workshop, or $40 for both ($35 per workshop, $60 for both at the door) ⭐️Social dance is on a sliding scale of $5-20, with a suggested $15. For the All-Level workshop, Paul and Marta will introduce a new pattern, but with an understanding of “why” so you will also leave with concepts to apply to all your dancing! To get the most out of this class, you will want to be familiar with Pushes, Passes, and Whips. The Newcomer workshop will be the perfect time to give this magical dance a try. Paul and Marta are passionate about introducing West Coast Swing to brand new dancers; it’s their specialty! See what all the fuss is about and why we love West Coast Swing so much! [email protected] BIOS: Paul and Marta Canfield are the owners of Canfield Dance Arts and have been active members of the West Coast Swing community since 1998. They began teaching West Coast Swing shortly after starting their own dance journeys and first met—by chance—when they drew each other’s names in a Jack and Jill competition. Based for many years in the Finger Lakes region of New York, they owned and operated a dance studio, directed a JT Swing Team for multiple seasons, and traveled nationally to teach and compete at West Coast Swing events. Two years ago, they relocated to the Charlotte, NC area. They are proud of their involvement in the Newcomer Tracks at Charlotte Westie Fest, Carolina Summer Swing, and Trilogy Swing dance events in the Carolinas throughout the year, and they are especially passionate about teaching brand-new dancers and welcoming them into the West Coast Swing community. They also have two young sons who are now becoming part of the WCS community themselves and beginning their own dance journeys.
