About this Event

This specialty workshop is for int to adv kizomba/semba dancers, from 3-4:30pm on Sunday Dec 1st. (photo is of Urban Kiz king Curtis Seldon from Paris) Once in the kizomba dance scene, you may wonder why there are many sub-genres in the music and dance and your idea of urban kiz may be quite fragmented-bits and pieces you have gathered on youtube and social media. Stephanie has travelled to France and Portugal over 7 years to follow the progression of Urban Kiz as well as semba in Paris very closely, going about 3x a year and staying for months at a time. Urban Kiz is a Parisian club phenomenon and revolution between dancers and djs, that spread socially to all over Europe via congresses, weekenders and workshops. It's amazing how many teachers do not have a syllabus or organized way of presenting families of moves. There are no names for foundation moves and generally combinations are taught, ie a long string of moves and some technique to execute them. Otherwise, studio dancers may also be able to teach body isos, musicality and style. Overall there is no big picture of what urban kiz actually is. This workshop will give you the overview you need to understand WHAT IS URBAN KIZ? What is the scope of it, what do the signature moves look like and what techniques are used to urbanize semba/kizomba. URBAN KIZ should be called URBAN SEMBA. Know your semba, add musicality, frequency change, how to change your muscle tension, how to interpret music...and u have Urban Semba. (Remember that Kiz/Kizomba is more popular and marketable than semba! So 'Kizomba' is used everywhere....). Urban Kiz is not Fusion. It has a very specific identity. It can be danced to many musical genres. When learning Urban Kiz: Knowledge of hip hop (break dance, pop n lock) is a plus. Having played an instrument is a plus. Having taken jazz, ballet, Afro-Cuban, African dance is a plus. Having taken semba... :) Join me in understanding the full scope of Urban Kiz ! $25 from 3pm to 11pm Dec 8th workshop will be Sensual movement, and then we will start a 4-wk wkshop series of styling (arms, hands, hips, torso, legs, feet) during the month of January.
